Chapter 9 - The Safe in the Wall-9

My heart hammered in my throat, but my hands remained entirely steady. I knew I couldn't take down an armed enforcer with a pair of pliers, but I didn't need to fight him—I just needed to complete my mission before they realized I was in the house.
I gestured for Ada to stay hidden near the kitchen pantry. I slipped quietly down the dark hallway toward the master study, staying low to avoid the shadows cast by the living room lights.
The study door was half-open. I slipped inside, closing it silently behind me.
In the corner of the room stood the heavy steel wall safe hidden behind a framed painting of the Lagos skyline. Femi thought he was the only one who knew the combination, but I was the one who had anchored the safe into the concrete wall studs six months ago.
I swung the painting aside, wiped my sweaty palms on my jeans, and turned the mechanical dial.
Left to 14... Right to 88... Left to 32...
CLICK.
The heavy steel door swung open. Inside lay three stacks of emergency cash, Femi’s passport, and at the very back—a thick, black leather-bound ledger containing every off-the-books wire transfer, customs receipt, and signed agreement Femi had executed for Aura Logistics over the past two years.
I grabbed the ledger, shoving it into my tool bag.
Suddenly, the study door burst open with a violent bang!
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING IN HERE?!"
Funmi stood in the doorway, her eyes wide with psychotic rage as she saw me standing in front of the open safe.
Behind her, the heavy-set enforcer rushed down the hallway, dragging a battered, terrified Femi by his collar.
"Bolu?!" Femi gasped, his face covered in bruises. "What... what are you doing here?!"

Funmi’s gaze landed on the heavy tool bag slung over my shoulder. "She has the black ledger! Kill her! Don't let her leave with that book!"
The enforcer raised the silenced pistol, pointing it directly at my chest.
