Chapter 6 - The Midnight Confession-6

Ada’s guest room in Surulere was small, quiet, and smelled of lavender detergent. For the first time in three years, as I sat on the edge of the plush bed, I felt my shoulders drop completely. The tension that had been coiled tightly inside my chest like a compressed spring finally began to release.

Ada walked in, carrying two large mugs of hot tea. She handed one to me and sat down in the armchair across from the bed.

"You were incredible," Ada said, shaking her head in utter disbelief. "I mean, I knew you were smart, Bolu, but the way you executed that entire exposed fraud scheme in front of thirty people? It was like watching a surgeon operate without anesthesia."

I took a slow sip of the hot tea, letting the warmth spread through my hands. "I didn't want to do it that way, Ada. If he had come to me with honesty—if he had told me he made a mistake or was in trouble—I would have given him every kobo I had to help him fix it. We were married. We were supposed to be a team."

"He didn't want a team," Ada said fiercely. "He wanted an accessory he could look down on. He thought because you work with your hands and wear stained jeans, you were too stupid to see through his grand illusions."

My phone vibrated violently on the nightstand.

Screen light flashed with a stream of incoming messages and missed calls. Femi had called seventeen times in the last hour. My mother-in-law was spamming my WhatsApp with voice notes, demanding to know why I had "humiliated her son" and frozen his accounts.

Then, an unknown number flashed across the screen.

I answered it, setting it on speaker. "Hello?"

"Bolu," a trembling, desperate voice came through the speaker. It wasn't Femi. It was Pamela, Funmi’s younger sister.

"Pamela?" I frowned, looking at Ada. "Why are you calling me from an unknown number?"

"Bolu, you need to listen to me carefully," Pamela whispered, her voice trembling with intense fear. "Funmi just left the family house with two men. She’s out of her mind, Bolu. She found out that you didn't just freeze the apartment assets... you unlocked the encrypted registry files for the Apapa port accounts!"

I sat up straight, my mechanic instincts instantly putting me on high alert. "What accounts, Pamela?"

"The ones tied to my late father's shipping crates," Pamela sobbed. "Funmi isn't just laundering money, Bolu. She’s moving stolen industrial hardware and illegal arms through those docks. And your husband, Femi... he signed the shipping manifests as the chief verification auditor!"
