PART 35

The tactical vans struck like lightning,

their high beams illuminating the dark field as they surrounded the syndicate vehicles.

Flashbangs exploded with deafening roars,

blinding the men who were trying to load a crate of stolen folders into their trunk.

Within two minutes,

the entire remaining cell of the Architect's network was on the ground,

in handcuffs,

screaming in frustration.

Detective Vance's partner looked up as Sarah and I walked out from the shadows,

our clothes covered in soot and sewer grime.

His eyes went wide with a mixture of terror and disbelief.

"How...

how did you get out?"

he stammered,

his face pressed into the wet dirt.

"My grandfather built that vault,"

I said,

stepping close,

looking down at him with zero emotion left.

"And he hated thieves."

The federal agents secured the property,

and by morning,

a specialized team had cleared the gas from the vault,

retrieving every single archival file safely.

The contents of those boxes changed everything.

By noon,

the state governor announced an emergency investigation into the entire judicial circuit,

suspending twelve judges and thirty-four prosecutors named in the ledgers.

The web that had held our town captive for forty years was ripped apart at the root.

I sat on the bumper of an FBI vehicle,

wrapped in a warm blanket,

watching the sun rise over the valley.

Noah was safe at the military compound,

waiting for me.

Sarah walked over,

handing me a hot cup of coffee.

"It's over, Emma."

"The whole thing."

"There’s no one left to come after you."

"You’re free."

I looked at the silver and platinum bracelet on my wrist,

shining in the new light.

May you like

"We’re free, Sarah."

"My dad can finally rest."
