PART 25

I dropped the dummy ledger onto the concrete floor,

it slid a few feet,

stopping near the chair.

"There,"

I shouted over the roar of the wind outside.

"I gave you what you wanted."

"Now let my son go!"

Vance chuckled,

walking down the metal stairs from the catwalk,

his gun held casually in his hand.

"You really thought you could destroy me, Emma?"

"A lonely housewife?"

"A betrayed sister?"

"I built this city."

"Every brick is laid with my money."

He picked up the book,

opening it quickly.

His eyes narrowed as he saw the blank pages and the blinking green light of the tracker inside.

"An FBI tracking device,"

he hissed,

his face turning purple with rage.

"You brought them here!"

He raised his gun,

pointing it straight at my chest.

"I’m going to enjoy watching you drown, Emma."

He pressed the button on the remote control.

The crane whined,

and the massive concrete block began to drop toward Noah.

"No!"

I screamed.

I didn't draw the gun,

there was no time.

I lunged forward,

throwing my body over Noah’s chair,

knocking it sideways onto the floor.

The concrete block slammed into the ground where the chair had been a split second before,

the impact fracturing the concrete,

sending dust and shards flying into the air.

The shockwave threw me against the floor,

scraping my face and arms.

Noah was crying through the tape,

unhurt but terrified.

Vance cursed loudly,

stepping through the dust cloud,

his gun raised again,

aiming at my head.

"Goodbye, Emma,"

he snarled.

A loud crack echoed through the warehouse.

May you like

But it didn't come from his gun.

It came from the dark corners of the building.
