PART 32

The steel door groaned,

the ancient hinges resisting before swinging upward with a heavy,

metallic scrape.

A gust of cool,

dry air rushed out from the darkness below,

smelling of old paper and copper.

Sarah shone her powerful flashlight down into the hole,

revealing a set of stone steps leading into a clean,

reinforced concrete room.

We descended slowly,

step by step,

our breaths visible in the sudden chill of the subterranean vault.

At the bottom,

the flashlight beam illuminated three massive rows of metal shelving.

They weren't filled with cash or gold.

They were filled with boxes of archival files,

each one labeled with a corporate seal.

I walked over to the first box,

pulling off the lid.

Inside were the original,

unaltered records of the city’s founding families,

the financial ledgers detailing the secret fortunes of every major dynasty in the state.

"This isn't just money, Emma,"

Sarah whispered,

her voice trembling as she flipped through a binder.

"This is leverage."

"Your grandfather didn't just hide wealth,"

"he kept the receipts on how everyone else made theirs."

"This is why the Architect was so terrified of your family."

"If these files ever went public,

the entire political and financial structure of the state would collapse in a day."

Suddenly,

a sound echoed from the top of the stone stairs.

The heavy steel door slammed shut with a deafening boom,

plunging us into darkness except for our flashlight beams.

The lock turned from the outside,

a sharp,

electronic click.

"Emma,"

a voice filtered through the small ventilation grate in the ceiling,

distorted but unmistakably clear.

It was Detective Vance’s partner,

the man who had escaped the FBI raid at the grocery store.

"Thank you for finding the vault for us."

"Now,

you can stay down there and rot with your grandfather’s secrets."

May you like

"The Architect may be dead,"

"but the syndicate still has bills to pay."
