Six months later,
the grass had grown back over the mud tracks on my lawn.
The flower beds were blooming with bright yellow daffodils,
my father’s favorite.
Claire had been sentenced to community service and probation,
the judge citing her critical cooperation and her role in rescuing Noah as mitigating factors.
She moved to a small town two hours away,
working at an animal shelter,
living a quiet,
honest life.
We didn't see each other every week,
the scars were still there,
deep and permanent.
But we spoke on Sundays.
We were trying to rebuild,

I stood in the kitchen,

The doorbell rang,

he smiled,
handing it over.

I signed my own name,

I took the box inside,
opening it on the counter.
Inside was a beautiful,
restored silver bracelet,
the chain replaced with strong,
unbreakable platinum links.
And a note from Claire.

I slipped it onto my wrist,
the metal catching the light.
