Chapter 7 - The Blueprint of a Crime-7

Agent Miller and Agent Vance exchanged a grave, significant glance. Agent Miller immediately pulled out his satellite phone and stepped into the hallway to place an urgent call to the regional field director.
Clara walked slowly back into the center of the room, her eyes fixed on Brandon’s trembling form.
"Every single moment of our relationship," Clara said, her voice barely above a whisper. "The meeting at the art gallery... the romantic weekend in Maine... the proposal on the beach... the tears you cried when the twins were born... all of it was a staged script written by Apex?"
Brandon lowered his head, unable to meet her gaze. "In the beginning, yes. It was just a job. They promised me ten percent of the land liquidation value once I secured administrative control of the trust. But then... then you got pregnant with Lila and Ivy. I wanted to pull out, Clara! I swear to God I wanted to stop! But Vanessa told me that if I backed out, Apex would kill me and make it look like an accident, just like they did to your father!"
"So instead of protecting your wife and daughters, you chose to poison me," Clara said coldly.
"I tried to keep the dosage low!" Brandon cried out desperately. "I made sure it was just enough to make you tired! Just enough to make you look overwhelmed so we could file the custody petition! I never wanted to permanently hurt you!"
"You left me alone for four days with two six-month-old babies while you were out celebrating on a yacht with the woman who helped murder my father," Clara said, her voice dropping into a register of absolute, unyielding ice. "You told me to 'act like a mother' while you actively worked to steal my children away from me."
Arthur Pendelton stepped forward, placing a gentle, protective hand on Clara’s shoulder. "Clara, you don't need to listen to any more of this. The task force has already seized the server hubs in Miami. We have enough to hold him in federal custody without bail."

"Take him away," Clara said, turning her back on her husband forever.
As the agents dragged Brandon down the bare wooden staircase, his frantic screams for forgiveness echoed through the empty halls of the house until the front door slammed shut, plunging the mansion back into total silence.
