Chapter 6 - The Shadow Partner-6

As the steel handcuffs clicked around Brandon’s wrists, his eyes filled with pure terror. He wasn't looking at Clara or the agents anymore; he was staring at the blank wall as if seeing a ghost.
"You don't know what you've done, Clara," Brandon whimpered, his voice shaking violently as he was pulled to his feet. "You think Vanessa and I were running this? Vanessa is just a mid-level executive! The money... the offshore accounts in Exuma... they don't belong to us!"
Clara paused at the bedroom doorway, her hand resting on the frame. She turned back slowly. "What are you talking about, Brandon?"
"Apex Risk Management isn't a private security firm!" Brandon gasped, his breath coming in fast, panicked bursts. "It’s a front! It's a shell corporation owned by a syndicate that buys up defaulted corporate debts and distressed real estate. They needed your father's trust capital because your father’s old land holdings in the northern corridor sit directly on top of the proposed federal rail expansion route! The land trust is worth ten times twenty-five million dollars if it's liquidated now!"
Clara’s expression remained perfectly impassive, though a cold chill ran down her spine. "Who owns Apex, Brandon?"
Brandon swallowed hard, his throat dry. "I don't know his real name! Everyone in the network just called him 'The Architect'! He’s the one who gave Vanessa the pharmaceuticals! He’s the one who orchestrated your father’s cardiac arrest four years ago!"
The room went dead silent.
Clara’s breath caught in her chest. Her father’s death four years ago had been sudden—a massive heart attack while working late in his private study. The doctors had called it natural causes due to high blood pressure and stress.

"My father died of a heart failure," Clara whispered, her composure momentarily cracking, exposing the raw, aching wound beneath.
"He died of an undetectable synthetic potassium compound that induces sudden cardiac arrest!" Brandon blurted out, tears of genuine fear streaming down his face now. "Vanessa told me after we got married in Dominica! She said your father refused to sell his northern land contracts to Apex, so they cleared him out of the way! But they didn't know he had locked the land up in a trust for you and your future kids! That’s why I was brought in! That's why I met you at that charity gala four years ago!"
