Chapter 13 - The Confrontation in the Library-13

Senator Sterling’s guards immediately moved to step into the room, but Sterling raised a single, commanding hand, halting them at the threshold. He closed the heavy oak door, locking it from the inside, his face morphing from mild surprise into a cold, calculating mask of political disdain.

"Where is Brandon?" Sterling demanded, his voice low, raspy, and filled with implicit danger. "And why aren't you in a hospital bed where you belong?"

"Brandon is currently in a federal holding cell, Senator," Clara replied calmly, walking over to a large mahogany reading desk and placing the land deed flat on the leather blotter. "And as for my health... the synthetic benzodiazepines your daughter provided were quite potent, but unfortunately for you, my body metabolizes toxins remarkably fast once the source is removed."

Sterling didn't flinch. He walked slowly toward the desk, resting his manicured hands on the polished wood.

"You're a very foolish young woman, Clara," Sterling said softly, a dark, sinister smirk touching his lips. "You think because you caught a weak, pathetic idiot like Brandon that you’ve accomplished something? Brandon was a disposable asset. So was my daughter, if she was sloppy enough to let you trace her."

"You murdered my father, Richard," Clara said, her voice steady and unyielding, her eyes locked onto his.

Sterling laughed—a dry, chilling sound that echoed off the leather-bound books surrounding them.

"Your father was an stubborn old fool who stood in the way of progress," Sterling spat without a shred of remorse. "He was offered thirty million dollars for those northern swamp plots, and he refused because of some sentimental nonsense about 'environmental preservation.' He had to be removed. Just like anyone else who stands in the path of my infrastructure mandate."

"And what about me?" Clara asked. "What about my six-month-old daughters?"

"You were an unfortunate necessity," Sterling murmured, leaning in close across the desk, his eyes cold as ice. "Once you were declared insane, I would have signed the land over to Apex, liquidated the trust, and had you quietly buried beside your father. And as for your little girls... they would have been raised in a private academy in Europe, far away from any memory of this family."

"You talk about human lives as if they're mere line items on a corporate ledger," Clara said.

"They ARE line items, Clara!" Sterling sneered, his composure finally snapping as his arrogance boiled over. "Power isn't built on mercy! It’s built on leverage, capital, and the willingness to do what lesser men fear to do! You have no proof, you have no witnesses, and you are standing in a locked room with three armed men. You leave those land deeds on this desk, or you won't make it down to the lobby alive."

Clara looked at him for a long, silent moment. Then, slowly, she reached to her lapel and unpinned a delicate, silver diamond brooch.

She pressed a small hidden button on the back of the brooch. A tiny red LED light stopped blinking and turned solid green.

"Thank you, Senator," Clara whispered softly. "That was everything the federal grand jury needed."
