Chapter 8 - The Federal Net-8

Before the smoke could even clear from the shattered wall paneling, the heavy oak double doors of the suite were shattered inward with a violent, hydraulic crash of tearing metal.

High-intensity white tactical searchlights cut through the smoky darkness like razor-sharp blades. A full platoon of twenty heavily armed FBI tactical operators, clad in dark navy assault gear with gold federal badges glinting on their vests, flooded the living room, their rifle barrels raised and rock-steady.

"FBI! NOBODY MOVE! DOWN ON THE FLOOR! HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!" the lead tactical operator bellowed, his voice carrying an inescapable, absolute authority that shattered whatever remaining illusions Bruce and Jim held.

Jim instantly collapsed onto his knees, sobbing uncontrollably as an operator forced his arms behind his back and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. Bruce attempted to scramble toward the balcony doors, but two tactical operators tackled him mid-stride, slamming his body weight flat against the marble floorboards and securing his wrists in heavy restraints.

Special Agent Sarah Harris stepped through the ruined doorway, her dark trench coat open, her service weapon holstered at her hip. She walked straight over to where I was standing near the shattered wall paneling, her eyes scanning me for injuries.

"Are you alright, Claire?" Agent Harris asked, her voice carrying a deep, professional respect.

"I'm fine," I said, drawing a deep breath of the cool night air filtering through the broken front door. I looked down at Bruce, who was glaring up at me from the floor, his face gaunt, his teeth stained with soot from the electrical blast.

Agent Harris knelt beside the destroyed wall cavity, using her flashlight to examine the matte-black external drive. She plugged her diagnostic tablet directly into the drive’s backup port, watching as the screens rendered a rapid cascade of forensic recovery metrics.

"The short-circuit interrupted the cascade script at ninety-eight point four percent, Claire," Agent Harris announced, a sharp, victorious smile breaking across her face. "The master signature tokens were captured in real-time. The eighty-five million dollars in liquid infrastructure grants has been permanently frozen in the federal escrow receivership."

She stood up and looked down at my husband. "Bruce Jennings, you are under arrest for international wire fraud, grand larceny, capital identity theft, and treason against public infrastructure assets under the RICO statutes. You're going away for a very long time."
