Chapter 5 - The Dinner of Shadows-5

Dinner that evening was a masterclass in psychological warfare.

We sat at a candlelit table on the resort’s oceanfront terrace. The air was warm and heavy with the scent of roasted seafood and ocean salt. Soft steel-drum music floated across the patio, and surrounding us were couples and families celebrating their summer escapes.

Bruce sat across from me, casually cutting into a thick steak, his demeanor smooth, relaxed, and entirely unremarkable. Jim sat to his left, sipping an expensive glass of wine, occasionally leaning down to joke with Lily about her sandcastle drawings.

"You've been awfully quiet tonight, Claire," Bruce remarked smoothly, setting his knife down with a soft metallic clink against his porcelain plate. He reached across the linen tablecloth and covered my hand with his. His palm was warm, but to me, it felt like the cold weight of an iron shackle. "Is everything alright at work?"

"Just dealing with a complex audit file," I lied effortlessly, offering a gentle, tired smile as I took a small sip of my water. "One of our regional infrastructure grants in Europe has a massive discrepancy in its escrow reports. I'm going to have to spend a few hours on my laptop tonight sorting through the transaction ledgers."

Jim’s hand froze mid-air as he raised his glass. He caught Bruce’s eye for a fraction of a second before quickly masking his reaction with a dry cough. "Tonight? Claire, you're on vacation. Can't the auditors handle it until we get back to the States?"

"Normally, yes," I said, leaning back in my chair and looking directly at my younger brother. "But the funds were routed through an offshore shell firm in Nicosia called Noraline Holdings. When a network like that gets flagged, the federal enforcement agencies move fast. If the master keys are captured, everyone connected to the routing accounts goes down under RICO statutes."

The silence that fell over our table was sudden, heavy, and suffocating.

The faint smile on Bruce's face hardened into a rigid, unnatural mask. The muscle along his jawline twitched violently once, twice, before he slowly withdrew his hand from mine.

"Noraline Holdings?" Bruce repeated, his voice dropping into an unnaturally flat, low register. "I've never heard of them."

"You wouldn't have," I replied calmly, cutting a small piece of fish on my plate with clinical precision. "It's an international criminal syndicate. They recruit desperate businessmen and ambitious young corporate officers to do their physical infrastructure work, promising them massive payouts... right up until the federal indictments are unsealed and the handlers wipe the paper trail, leaving the boots-on-the-ground operators to take the fall for capital treason."

Jim’s face drained of color so rapidly that he looked as if he might vomit right onto the pristine white tablecloth. He opened his mouth to speak, but Bruce subtly kicked him beneath the table, silencing him with a single, lethal glare.

"Fascinating," Bruce said, his voice entirely devoid of warmth now, his gray eyes fixing onto mine with a cold, calculating intensity that made my skin crawl. "It’s amazing what you learn at a banking compliance desk, isn't it, Claire?"
