Chapter 6 - The Intercept in the Dark-6

By 10:30 p.m., the resort had quieted down. Lily was fast asleep in her bed, exhausted from the afternoon in the sun. I had changed into a dark pair of jeans and a lightweight utility jacket, waiting in the secondary bedroom with the door cracked slightly open.
Through the gap, I watched the main living area of the suite.
Bruce and Jim had turned off the overhead track lamps, leaving only the dim, amber glow of the terrace lights filtering through the sheer curtains. They were hovering over the opened paneling behind the entertainment center. The matte-black external drive was humming with a high-pitched digital whine, its tiny LED status lights flashing in a rapid, erratic strobe pattern.
"The cascade script is at eighty-two percent," Jim whispered nervously, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand. "We have less than forty minutes before the New York clearing house executes the final verification loop. Bruce, are you sure Claire doesn't suspect anything?"
"She knows something is off," Bruce growled in a low, furious whisper, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard of a high-performance laptop connected to the transponder. "She was dropping hints at dinner. Her agency is watching the Cypriot escrow lines. We execute the transfer, extract the physical carbon-fiber drive, and clear out of this island on the 6:00 a.m. charter flight before her federal friends even realize the signal originated from this sector."
"And what about Claire and Lily?" Jim asked, his voice cracking slightly with a sudden, desperate hesitation. "If the federal task force tracks the node back to this suite, she’s going to be implicated! She's the primary compliance officer on record!"
"That's the point, you idiot," Bruce hissed, turning his head to glare at my brother with cold, unadulterated malice. "If the feds find her signature tokens on the override files, they'll assume she was the internal mole inside the regulatory board. It gives us total immunity while we liquidate the Zurich accounts. Now shut up and keep your eyes on the transponder bar."
Standing in the shadow of the doorway, hearing my own husband frame me for international treason while my younger brother stood by and allowed it, a cold, unyielding wall of absolute resolve solidified inside my heart.
The fear vanished. The grief over their betrayal evaporated, replaced entirely by the razor-sharp clarity of an investigator who had found her target.

I reached into my utility jacket pocket and pulled out a small, high-density hardware bypass key—a specialized forensic extraction tool given to me by Agent Harris before I left for the island.
I didn't draw a weapon, and I didn't scream for help. I waited until the digital progress bar on their laptop screen ticked up to 94%, then I stepped out of the bedroom into the amber-lit living room, my boots making no sound against the heavy plush carpet.
