Chapter 4 - The Protocol Activated-4

"Harris," the voice crackled through the receiver on the first ring, authoritative and completely sharp.
"Sarah, it's Claire," I said, keeping my back to the lounge entrance while Lily happily drew pictures on a notepad at a nearby table. "I'm calling from the Grand Azure Resort in Saint Martin. The Noraline asset transfer isn't happening in Europe. It's happening here, right now, through an illegal satellite proxy node installed in my hotel suite."
There was an immediate, deadly pause on the other end of the line. I heard the distinct rustle of paper and the rapid clatter of a mechanical keyboard being engaged.
"Claire, repeat that," Agent Harris commanded, her tone shifting instantly into an operational frequency. "You're saying you located an active Noraline extraction terminal?"
"Yes," I answered, my voice dropping to a low, clinical whisper. "And it gets worse, Sarah. The operators executing the physical deployment are my husband, Bruce, and my brother, Jim. They have physical possession of the primary cryptographic hardware tokens."
"My God, Claire..." Sarah breathed softly. Then her professional composure reasserted itself with absolute finality. "Listen to me very carefully. Do not confront them. Do not let them suspect that you know anything. The Noraline syndicate isn't just a financial network; they have extra-jurisdictional enforcement teams operating throughout the Caribbean shipping basin. If Bruce or Jim realize the node is compromised, their handlers will liquidate the entire operational footprint—including anyone who has seen the hardware."
My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit. "How long until you can get a federal tactical team on the ground?"
"We have a joint maritime task force stationed at the naval station forty miles off the coast," Harris replied rapidly. "I can have a strike unit on the resort perimeter in precisely forty-five minutes. But I need you to secure the digital validation keys from that drive before they trigger the automated zero-fill wipe script."
"How do I stop the wipe?" I asked, my gray eyes locking onto the high-definition security monitor above the lounge desk.
"The Noraline architecture uses an autonomous cascade protocol," Harris explained. "If the primary transfer hits one hundred percent, the hard drive automatically executes a thermal runaway sequence, destroying the physical circuit boards and erasing all transaction histories. You have to physically insert an override loop or sever the primary transponder before the midnight clearing bell."

I looked at the digital clock on the lounge wall. The time was 5:14 p.m.
We had less than seven hours before midnight, and I was trapped in a luxury paradise with two men I thought I knew better than anyone on earth—two men who were preparing to trade our family's future for eighty-five million dollars of blood money.
