Chapter 9 - The Council of Wolves

-9-

The grand boardroom on the top floor of the Vance estate looked out over the sprawling, fog-drenched landscape of the Chicago suburbs. Heavy mahogany paneling, towering arched windows, and a massive conference table carved from a single slab of black walnut set a tone of absolute authority and intimidation. Around the table sat the six surviving capos of the Chicago syndicate—hardened men with scars, expensive tailored suits, and decades of criminal history etched into their weathered faces.

Tension hung thick in the air. Whispers rippled across the room like a restless tide.

"I'm telling you, Marcus hasn't answered his comms in twelve hours," whispered Salvatore, a bulky veteran capo with a broken nose, leaning across the table toward his associate. "And word on the street is the master wing was locked down by Victor's personal guard unit at dawn. The boss didn't survive the night."

"If Julian's dead, the entire power structure is up for grabs," the other capo muttered, his eyes darting toward the empty head of the table. "Vanessa already promised us autonomy over the shipping terminals if we backed her succession—"

Clack.

The heavy double doors at the end of the boardroom swung open with absolute finality.

Every head snapped toward the entrance.

Victor stepped through first, his posture rigid, his hand resting casually near his holster. Behind him strode Julian Vance.

He was dressed in a tailored black three-piece suit, his posture completely upright, his steps firm and measured against the polished marble floor. Though his face was still slightly pale from the lingering effects of the poison, the raw, suffocating aura of absolute power radiated from him with such intensity that several capos instinctively recoiled in their seats, their faces turning ghost-white.

It was the resurrection of a ghost.

Julian walked to the head of the table, pulling out the massive high-backed leather chair with slow, deliberate movements. He sat down, resting his hands flat on the polished walnut surface, and stared around the room with his piercing gray eyes.

Dead silence descended upon the boardroom. You could hear the distant tick of the antique grandfather clock in the corner.

Salvatore swallowed hard, his voice trembling slightly as he forced out the words. "Boss... we... we were told you were critically ill. The reports—"

"The reports were manufactured by a traitor," Julian interrupted, his voice cutting through the silence like a jagged piece of glass. He didn't raise his voice, yet every man in the room flinched at the sheer chill in his tone.

Julian slid the heavy leather ledger across the center of the walnut table, stopping it right in front of Salvatore’s trembling hands.

"Open it, Salvatore. Page forty-eight."

Salvatore’s hands shook as he cracked open the heavy leather cover, flipping to the specified page. His eyes scanned the detailed financial entries, the routing numbers, the chemical manifests—and the unmistakable signature of Vanessa Sterling alongside the syndicate's most bitter rivals on the East Coast.

The color drained entirely from Salvatore’s face. He slammed the ledger shut as if it were burning his fingers, dropping his gaze immediately to the floor.

"For the past six months," Julian continued, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the table as his gaze swept across the faces of every capo in the room, "while I was slowly paralyzed in my own bed by a coward's poison, conspiracies were hatched under this very roof. People I trusted—people who swore blood oaths to this syndicate—sold our secrets, our terminals, and our future to the highest bidder."

Julian paused, letting the heavy, suffocating silence press down upon the table until the air felt impossible to breathe.

"Vanessa is currently in the lower holding cells," Julian said coldly. "Marcus is joining her shortly. Their assets have been seized, their accounts frozen, and their network dismantled root and branch."

He stood up slowly, leaning over the table, his gray eyes burning with lethal intent.

"Now," Julian said softly, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "Before we discuss rebuilding our territories... I want to look every single one of you in the eye and ask you a very simple question."

He paused, letting the silence stretch to a breaking point.

"Who among you is next?"
