Chapter 10 - A New Bloodline

-10-

The boardroom was dead silent. Not a single capo dared to lift his eyes from the polished walnut table. The sheer, overwhelming dominance Julian projected erased any lingering thoughts of rebellion, betrayal, or opportunistic power-grabbing. They knew the truth now: Julian Vance was not a fading king waiting for death; he was an apex predator who had just survived the deadliest trap ever laid for him, and he was hungrier than ever.

"Meeting adjourned," Julian said coldly, his voice echoing off the high vaulted ceiling. "Victor, escort these gentlemen out. Anyone who so much as sneaks a glance toward the East Coast syndicate without my direct authorization will meet the same fate as Vanessa."

"Right away, Boss," Victor rumbled, gesturing sharply toward the doors.

The six capos practically tripped over themselves scrambling out of the boardroom, desperate to escape the suffocating pressure of Julian’s presence. Within seconds, the heavy double doors clicked shut, leaving Julian alone in the vast, silent room.

He exhaled a long, steady breath, letting his shoulders drop slightly as the mask of absolute ruthlessness faded, revealing the exhausted man beneath. He reached into his suit jacket, pulling out a small, framed photograph that Victor had recovered from the guest quarters earlier that morning—a candid shot of me smiling while braiding Maya’s dark hair in the kitchen just two days ago.

A soft, genuine smile touched the corners of Julian’s mouth.

Ten minutes later, Julian descended the grand staircase and walked down the wide corridor leading to the private family quarters in the east wing. The heavy oak door was unlocked. He pushed it open quietly.

I was sitting at the small mahogany writing desk by the window, reviewing a list of estate inventory updates Victor had given me, while Maya sat cross-legged on the rug, intensely coloring a picture book with a box of crayons.

When the door clicked, both of us looked up.

Maya’s face lit up instantly. She dropped her crayons and scrambled to her feet, running across the room. "Julian!" she cried out, throwing her arms around his knees.

Julian dropped to one knee, ignoring any lingering stiffness in his joints, and wrapped his arms tightly around her small frame, lifting her up effortlessly. He buried his face in her dark hair, letting out a deep, contented sigh that seemed to lift years of accumulated stress and paranoia off his shoulders.

I stood up from the desk, walking over to them with a soft smile. "You look entirely too well for a man who was comatose twenty-four hours ago," I teased gently.

Julian stood up, still holding Maya with one arm, and reached out with his free hand, gently taking mine. Pulling us both close, he looked into my eyes with an expression of profound, absolute devotion.

"Turns out," Julian murmured softly, "the best medicine in the world isn't found in a hospital lab. It's standing right in front of me."

I felt a warm flush rise to my cheeks, the hardened walls I had built around my heart during ten years of lonely survival finally crumbling away completely. "You handled the board?"

"They won't be trying anything stupid for the next fifty years," Julian smirked, a hint of his classic underworld swagger returning. "The syndicate is secure. The traitors are gone. And from this moment forward, the Vance family name means something entirely different."

He looked down at Maya, who was happily examining the silver pocket watch she still clutched in her hand, before shifting his gaze back to me.

"Tonight, we have a lot to talk about," Julian said, his voice laced with quiet promise. "About our past, about the years we lost, and about the future we're going to build together behind these fortress walls."

May you like

"I'd like that," I whispered, leaning my head against his shoulder as the Chicago sun bathed the entire room in warm, golden light.

The war was over. The shadows had been banished. And for the first time in our lives, we were truly home.
