Chapter 3 - The Secret Ledger

-3-
The air inside Julian’s private study smelled of aged bourbon, expensive leather, and the lingering, metallic trace of old secrets. Moonlight poured through the towering floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, casting long, geometric shadows across the Turkish rug. I stood just inside the threshold, listening intently. The house remained deadly quiet, save for the distant, rhythmic ticking of a grandfather clock down the hall.
Julian had told me the safe was behind the portrait of his grandfather—the ruthless patriarch who had built the Chicago empire decades ago. I crept across the room, my footsteps entirely muffled by the thick wool. In the pale moonlight, the portrait of the stern-faced old man stared down at me with an expression of cold judgment, as if testing whether I belonged in this world of blood and power.
Reaching up, I gripped the heavy wooden frame and gently swung it outward on its well-oiled hinges.
There it was—a heavy, steel-plated wall safe, its digital keypad dark, but featuring a manual backup keyhole just below the dial. My hands, steady despite the adrenaline pumping through my veins, slid the tiny brass key I had extracted from Julian’s pocket watch into the concealed keyhole. It fit with a precision that felt almost symbolic. I turned it clockwise. A heavy internal mechanism released with a deep, muffled thud.
I pulled the steel door open.
Inside sat a stack of thick manila folders, a digital flash drive, and a heavy leather-bound ledger with gold-embossed lettering. My fingers brushed the cover of the ledger as I pulled it out into the moonlight. Flipping it open, I saw columns of meticulously handwritten names, dates, financial transfers, and signatures. It was the master blueprint of the entire Chicago syndicate—and more importantly, a detailed log of every bribe, betrayal, and payout executed within the mansion over the past five years.
And right there, on the most recent page, dated just three weeks ago, was a signature that made my blood run cold: Vanessa Sterling.
Next to her signature was an itemized list of chemical compounds, dosages, and offshore routing numbers connecting her directly to the syndicate's most ruthless rivals on the East Coast. She wasn't just trying to take over Julian’s empire; she was selling it out to the very men Julian had spent a decade fighting to eradicate. If Vanessa succeeded, the entire Chicago underworld would plunge into a bloodbath, and every person loyal to Julian—starting with him and ending with my daughter and me—would be systematically exterminated.
Suddenly, a sharp click echoed from the hallway outside the study.
My breath caught in my throat. I slammed the safe door shut, swinging the heavy portrait back into place just as the brass handle of the study door began to turn.
Panic surged through me. There was no time to escape through the door. I scrambled behind the heavy mahogany executive desk, dropping flat onto the Persian rug just as the study door creaked open.
Heavy, measured footsteps echoed across the hardwood floor.
"I could have sworn I heard a noise down here," Marcus’s gravelly voice muttered in the darkness. The beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight swept across the bookshelves, casting erratic bars of light over the furniture.
I pressed my face against the dusty fibers of the rug, clutching the heavy leather ledger tightly to my chest. My heart slammed against my ribs like a sledgehammer, so loud I was certain the brute could hear it echoing across the room. Every muscle in my body locked tight.
The footsteps drew closer, stopping just a few feet from the desk. The flashlight beam swept back and forth across the floor, lingering dangerously close to my boots tucked beneath the desk overhang.
"Vanessa's getting paranoid," Marcus muttered to himself, letting out a rough sigh. "The boss won't last another forty-eight hours anyway. Why she's so jumpy is beyond me."
He lingered for another agonizing minute, the metallic clinking of his holster filling the tense silence. Then, slowly, the footsteps receded toward the door. The heavy oak door clicked shut once more.

I let out a shaky, silent breath, my whole body trembling with the adrenaline crash. I had survived the first close encounter, but time was running out. Julian was fading fast upstairs, and Vanessa and Marcus were actively tightening the noose around the entire estate.
Cradling the ledger like a precious shield, I crawled out from beneath the desk, stood up, and slipped back out into the shadowy hallway, determined to make it back to the east wing before anyone else realized I was missing.
