Chapter 6 - The Midnight Confrontation

-6-

The footsteps stopped right outside the heavy mahogany double doors of the master suite. Every muscle in my body locked into a state of hyper-alert survival mode. I grabbed Maya by the hand, pulling her swiftly toward the massive oak wardrobe in the corner of the room, sliding her into the dark recess behind the heavy velvet drapes just as a sharp, commanding knock rattled the door frame.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

It wasn't a tentative knock of a servant or a worried doctor. It was the heavy, authoritative rap of someone who believed they already owned the estate.

"Julian?" Vanessa’s voice sliced through the heavy silence, sounding eerily sweet, yet laced with a razor-sharp edge of impatience. "Open the door, darling. I brought your fresh evening broth. You missed dinner, and Dr. Harris insists you maintain your strength."

I held my breath, crouching behind the velvet drapes with Maya pressed tightly against my chest, her small hand clutching my sleeve so hard her knuckles were white. Across the room, half-concealed by the dim amber glow of the medical monitors, Julian slowly shifted his weight against the pillows. His right hand remained firmly gripped around the cold steel of the Colt M1911 hidden beneath the heavy blankets.

"The door is unlocked, Vanessa," Julian called out, his voice raspy and intentionally weak, perfectly mimicking the dying patriarch she expected him to be.

A soft click echoed as the brass handle turned. The heavy doors swung open, flooding the chilled, dim bedroom with the warm, golden light of the hallway chandeliers.

Vanessa stepped across the threshold, holding a silver tray bearing a steaming porcelain bowl of dark broth. Behind her loomed the massive, imposing figure of Marcus, his hand resting casually near the holstered firearm beneath his tailored suit jacket. Their eyes swept across the room, lingering momentarily on the frost-covered windows before settling on the gaunt, frail figure propped up in the center of the bed.

A subtle, triumphant smirk touched the corners of Vanessa’s lips. She glided across the room with the grace of a black widow, stopping a few feet from the bedside.

"You look terribly pale tonight, Julian," Vanessa purred, setting the silver tray down on the mahogany nightstand right next to the heavy leather ledger—which we had managed to partially conceal beneath a stack of medical reports just seconds before she entered. "Your breathing sounds worse, too. Perhaps this is the night you finally find peace."

Julian stared up at her, his gray eyes completely devoid of warmth, mirroring an abyss of pure, unadulterated ice. "You've been very attentive lately, Vanessa. Planning my final days down to the minute, aren't you?"

Vanessa’s smile faltered for a microsecond before returning, sharper and more venomous than before. "I only want what's best for you, darling. The burden of this empire is too heavy for a man whose body is failing him. Soon, the board will convene, the succession papers will be signed, and you won't have to worry about a single thing ever again."

"And what about the Docks?" Julian asked quietly, his gaze piercing straight through her porcelain facade. "What about the East Coast syndicate accounts you've been funneling our capital into for the past six months?"

The color drained entirely from Vanessa’s face. The silver tray in her hand rattled slightly against the nightstand as her composure shattered completely. She stepped back, her eyes wide with sudden, unadulterated panic.

"What... what are you talking about?" she stammered, casting a frantic glance back at Marcus.

Marcus instantly dropped his hand to his holster, his massive frame tensing like a coiled spring. "Boss, you're delirious from the fever. Let me handle this—"

"Shut your mouth, Marcus," Julian commanded, his voice suddenly stripping away all artificial weakness, ringing out with the terrifying, resonant thunder of the undisputed king of the Chicago underworld.

With a swift, fluid motion that defied his frail appearance, Julian threw off the heavy wool blankets, pulled the Colt M1911 from beneath the covers, and leveled the barrel straight at Marcus’s chest.

Marcus froze, his hand hovering inches from his weapon, the realization crashing over him that they had walked directly into a trap.

"You thought you were burying me," Julian said, cocking the hammer with a sharp, metallic click that echoed ominously in the silent room. "You thought you could poison my blood, steal my empire, and leave me to rot in this bed while you carved up my legacy like vultures."

Vanessa stumbled backward, her manicured hands flying to her mouth as she stared at the gun, trembling violently. "You... you shouldn't even be able to lift your arms..."

"Never underestimate a man who has something worth fighting for," Julian replied coldly. He shifted his gaze slightly, looking past Vanessa toward the open doorway where the shadows of the hallway shifted.

A heavy, booted footstep echoed from the corridor.

Before Marcus could draw his weapon, three armed men in black tactical gear—Victor leading the charge—burst into the master suite, their automatic weapons instantly trained squarely on Marcus and Vanessa.

"Game's over, bitch," Victor snarled, stepping forward with a pair of heavy steel zip-ties in his hands. "Hands behind your back. Now."
