Chapter 6 - The Short-Circuit Cascade

6

"Pull the trigger, Carter," I said, my voice dropping into a freezing, clinical cadence that stripped away any trace of human fear or hesitation. I stood up slowly from my knees, my large frame completely blocking the view of my father’s chair behind my broad shoulders, my hand gripping the handles of the heavy steel demolition crowbar. "Pull it. Let the tactical units drop you right where you stand in front of your operators. Let the county coroner document every single thing you and Reagan have done to this family on the public record. Because the moment you fire... the federal grand jury gets total ownership of your entire development firm."

The absolute, terrifying lack of fear in my voice cracked Carter’s corporate composure like glass. His hand trembled violently, the silver compact pistol shaking in his sweat-slicked fingers as the thunder shook the concrete foundations of the storage park outside.

Before his finger could descend onto the trigger guard, I launched my entire body weight forward across the console desk terminal. I didn't try to tackle his operators; I hurled the heavy steel crowbar straight into the center of the massive, high-voltage electrical transformer box mounted on the concrete pylon directly adjacent to the server racks.

CRASH-BOOM.

The heavy iron bar smashed through the protective fiberglass shielding, short-circuiting the main three-phase industrial power line running into the warehouse grid. A blinding, blue-white explosion of electrical arc fire erupted from the box, hissing violently as the pouring rain leaking through the corrugated roof vents flooded the exposed circuits.

The automatic carbines fired a wild, uncontrolled burst into the concrete ceiling panels as the operators were thrown backward by the sheer concussive force of the electrical blast, their weapons flying from their hands and spinning off into the dark drainage trenches below.

The entire storage park was plunged into a sudden, pitch-black twilight, the high-density server racks grinding to a dead halt as the main circuit breakers tripped, leaving nothing but the vibrant neon-green countdown timer on my personal mobile device flashing down toward zero in the dark.

"The server core is locked down, Finnley!" Marco shouted through the smoky darkness, his tactical flashlight painting a bright white beam through the plaster dust as he lunged toward my father’s chair. "The cascade partition format was interrupted before it could touch the primary recovery files! The original digital signature tokens linking Reagan to the Nicosia shell accounts are completely intact!"

The heavy iron double doors at the front loading dock were suddenly shattered inward with a violent, hydraulic screech of tearing metal. Special Agent Harris, followed by twenty heavily armed FBI tactical operators with their high-intensity searchlights cutting through the smoky darkness, flooded the vault floor, their weapons raised and rock-steady as they secured the perimeter.

"Federal agents! Nobody move! Put your hands on your heads!" the lead tactical operator bellowed, his voice carrying an absolute, inescapable federal authority that finalized the total destruction of the Nicosia family syndicate.
