Chapter 4 - Storage Unit 108

4

The interior of the subterranean sub-level beneath the Leopold Storage Facility was a cavernous, low-ceilinged vault of wet masonry, roaring ventilation turbines, and exposed high-voltage conduits that vibrated with a deafening, industrial hum. The air down here was hot, thick, smelling of hot axle grease, dry dust, and the sharp chemical tang of short-circuiting electrical lines.

Marco and I moved with clinical speed down the narrow iron catwalk, guided only by the narrow, red-filtered beams of our tactical flashlights. With every level we descended into the building’s foundations, the atmospheric pressure rose, generated by the thousands of high-density processor blades humming inside the central server vaults ahead.

We reached the end of the long corridor aisle where Sector 4 opened up into a large, vaulted concrete room dominated by a single row of heavy, reinforced corrugated steel doors.

Standing before the door marked 108 was the master cryptographic console terminal—a massive wrap-around desk featuring an integrated biometric palm-scanner, a retinal reader, and an electronic digital keypad that was glowing a malicious, vibrant neon crimson overlay.

"Connection established, Finnley," Marco whispered, his fingers flying across his portable diagnostic tablet as he plugged an interface patch cord directly into the console’s primary diagnostic port. "The local server core is active. The Nicosia transaction script is currently at eighty-four percent... eighty-five percent... eighty-six percent..."

I stepped forward, my hand fumbling inside my travel jacket pocket until my fingers wrapped around the rusted iron key the groundskeeper had given me. I inserted the key into the legacy mechanical lock cylinder beneath the digital keypad panel. The old tumblers clicked smoothly into place with a sharp, heavy sound that felt like a door opening into a tomb.

“Biometric override required to finalize data isolation.”

"Finnley! Look at the gate monitor!" Marco shouted, his voice dropping into a tense, urgent whisper.

I looked up at the corner screen. The red sedan from my stepmother’s driveway had just torn through the shattered outer perimeter gates of the storage park. Carter stood in the courtyard, his tailored designer coat soaked to the shoulders, his face a terrifying mask of absolute, unadulterated avarice as he directed four heavily armed private operators wearing tactical vests with the letters Croft Security emblazoned across their chests down the maintenance stairs.

"They’re in the main pylon corridor," Marco hissed, drawing a heavy steel utility tool from his belt. "And they have linear breaching charges that will turn this entire concrete block into a furnace in ten seconds."
