Chapter 3 - The Industrial Canal Block

3

The tires of Marco’s dented pickup truck screamed as he pushed the high-performance engine through the flooded potholes and broken gravel tracks of the industrial shipping canal district. A blinding sheet of freezing valley rain battered the cracked windshield, smearing the gray silhouettes of abandoned manufacturing foundries and rusted iron cranes into a terrifying, shifting wasteland.

I sat in the passenger seat, my travel jacket thrown aside, my hands clenching the handles of a heavy steel demolition crowbar from the truck’s rear utility chest. Every breath tasted like diesel soot and old copper, but my gray eyes remained locked onto the digital navigation tablet mounted on the dashboard frame.

The time was 4:42 p.m. We had less than seventy-eight minutes before the Nicosia wire transfers achieved absolute, non-revocable validation status.

"The storage park is operating under a private corporate security contract funded directly by Vance Financial Group—the Senator’s primary campaign donors," Marco said, swerving the truck around a rusted steel shipping container that blocked the main access lane. "The perimeter is protected by a ten-ton electronic blast gate and a continuous high-frequency wireless surveillance matrix. If we attempt a standard keycard breach at the front gate, the network firewalls will trigger a localized system lockdown, alerting Carter’s operators before we can even clear the intake curb."

"We’re not using the front gate, Marco," I said, pointing the crowbar toward a narrow, unlit concrete utility access tunnel that ran parallel to the canal locks. "My father designed the primary drainage matrix for this entire logistics block thirty years ago. The old water filtration shafts... they route directly beneath the concrete foundations of Sector 4, ending straight inside the maintenance utility closets of the sub-level vault ring."

"It’s a massive structural risk, Finnley," Marco warned, his face a hard mask of pure adrenaline as he killed the truck’s headlights, drifting the heavy vehicle into the shadow of an overgrown loading dock. "The canal water is rising because of the storm. If the pressure valves along the lock array blow while we're inside those pipes... we’ll be trapped inside an industrial electric chair with forty thousand volts of high-voltage server core current running through the standing water."

"I spent three years standing inside a six-by-nine concrete box because I trusted the system to find the truth, Marco," I said, throwing the truck door open to the freezing storm, my boots hitting the wet gravel with an iron strength that stripped away any remaining trace of human hesitation. "Today, I’m breaking the system from the root. Let’s go get my father."
