Chapter 5 - The Fire Ax Override

"The deletion cascade is accelerating automatically, Finnley!" Marco screamed over the roar of the server fans, his face turning a sharp, bloodless white as he monitored the digital tablet monitors. "The corporate firewalls are executing a localized zero-fill script! If it hits one hundred percent, the master boot sectors are permanently overwritten with random garbage data, destroying the evidence of your frame-up and leaving your father legally dead on the state registry forever!"
"The script is a lie, Marco," a low, raspy, completely clear voice spoke from the shadows inside Storage Unit 108.
The heavy corrugated steel door had swung outward on its counterbalanced hydraulic hinges, revealing a pristine, white-lit insulated inner chamber hidden behind the server racks. Sitting in a specialized high-security medical rehabilitation chair, his body hooked to a dozen digital monitoring lines and clear plastic IV tubes running into his arms, was my father, Camden Dennis.
His hair was completely white, his face gaunt and heavily scarred from twelve months of solitary isolation, but his gray eyes—the exact same eyes he had given me twenty-six years ago—locked onto my face with a profound, unblinking clarity that wiped away the remaining coldness in my soul.
"Finnley..." my father whispered, his voice cracking with a deep, emotional exhaustion as he reached out his trembling right hand, his fingers clenching around my wrist with a fierce, unexpected maternal—sorry, fatherly—devotion. "You came back. The old key... the groundskeeper kept his word."
"I’m here, Dad," I said, dropping to my knees beside his chair, my tears finally breaking through the wall of numbness that had paralyzed me for three years. "I’m here. The tactical operators are clearing the doorway. We have to move you out of this bunker right now."
"We can't move him without cutting the primary high-voltage intake valve running from the city's utility grid into his medical node, Finnley!" Marco shouted, pointing to a thick bundle of red insulated power cables running from the base of his chair straight into the central transformer box mounted on the concrete pylon. "If we tear those wires out manually without an administrative override, the electrical current will ground directly into his pacemaker tracks, triggering a catastrophic cardiac arrest in ten seconds!"
Through the smoky haze of the shattered corridor aisle, the dark silhouettes of Carter’s private operators appeared at the end of the white-lit hallway. They moved with a clinical, military-grade precision, their short-barreled submachine guns raised, their tactical visors reflecting the flashing red emergency lights of the isolation matrix.

Carter stepped into the light, his face twisted into a demonic mask of pure triumph as he leveled a sleek, silver compact pistol directly at my father's forehead. "It’s over, Finnley. The Nicosia wire hits one hundred percent in exactly sixty seconds. Hand over the master field diary notebook, or I will paint this entire concrete wall with his brains right now."
