Chapter 8 - THE NEW FOUNDATION

-8-

Two weeks after the deposition, the autumn air turned crisp and clear, carrying the earthy scent of falling leaves across the grounds of the Brooks estate. Inside the tranquil nursery of the east wing, Leo stretched his tiny arms, letting out a soft, contented yawn as I gently buttoned his soft cotton onesie.

He was growing fast, gaining weight and strength every day under the watchful care of our pediatric specialists and the loving attention of his grandfather.

My father walked into the nursery, holding a thick leather portfolio under his arm. He smiled warmly as he watched me cradle Leo against my shoulder, gently patting his back.

"He has your eyes, you know," my father observed softly, stepping closer to touch Leo’s tiny hand with his index finger. "Strong grip, too. He’s going to run half of Brooks Global before he's thirty."

"Let's let him get through teething first, Dad," I replied with a light laugh, settling Leo into his mahogany bassinet as he drifted back to sleep.

My father smiled, pulling up a velvet armchair and sitting down. He placed the leather portfolio on the small side table. "I wanted to go over some corporate restructuring proposals with you when you had a quiet moment. Now that Vance Technologies has been completely liquidated and absorbed into our infrastructure division, we have a major vacancy in our western regional tech development board. The board has unanimously voted to offer you the seat as Managing Director of Innovation and Strategic Acquisitions."

I looked down at the portfolio, feeling a familiar, long-dormant spark of ambition reignite in my chest. For two years, I had kept my professional capabilities hidden behind a veil of domestic quietness to appease Dominic’s fragile ego. I had allowed myself to be sidelined, treating my own intellect and business acumen as secondary to a man who couldn't even manage a startup without crashing it into federal bankruptcy.

"I'm ready," I said simply, meeting my father's proud gaze. "It's time to step back into the light."

"I knew you would say that," my father replied, his eyes shining with deep pride. "Marcus has already prepared the public announcement. Next Monday, Brooks Global will issue a formal press release introducing you as the newly appointed Managing Director—and correcting the public record regarding your personal and professional history."

"What about Dominic and his family?" I asked.

My father's expression hardened slightly. "Federal prosecutors have formally indicted Dominic and Victoria on multiple counts of wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy. Because they cooperated with the asset surrender and pled guilty to mitigate sentencing, they managed to avoid maximum federal prison terms, but Dominic is facing three years in a minimum-security federal penitentiary, and Victoria received two years of house arrest and heavy financial restitution. Their social circle has completely abandoned them; even Chloe Mendez vanished the moment the bank accounts were frozen."

I felt no pity—only a profound sense of closure. They had built their entire existence on deception, manipulation, and cruelty, and reality had simply collected the debt they owed.

"And Natalie?" I asked.

"Moved back into a small suburban apartment with her parents, working an entry-level retail job to help pay off her mother's legal fees," my father said dismissively. "She deleted all her social media accounts within forty-eight hours of the scandal breaking."

I turned away from the window, walking over to the desk where the portfolio lay. My phone buzzed quietly on the marble surface. It was a notification from our private estate security.

“Package delivered at the front gates for Mrs. Vance.”

Curious, I asked one of the estate attendants to retrieve it. A few minutes later, a small, heavily taped cardboard box was placed on the study table. I opened it with a letter opener, pulling out a handful of items that had been retrieved from a storage locker Dominic had rented downtown before his arrest.

Among the clutter of old receipts, college memorabilia, and discarded tech gadgets was a small, leather-bound journal I thought I had lost years ago—my personal diary from my university days, long before I ever met Dominic Vance.

I flipped open the cover. On the first page, written in my own handwriting, were words I had penned when I first graduated with my master's degree in business administration:

“Never compromise your strength for someone afraid of your shadow.”

May you like

I smiled, closing the journal and sliding it into my bag. I had spent two years forgetting those words, letting myself shrink to fit inside the narrow, suffocating box Dominic had constructed for me. But sitting here now, in my family's home, holding my son, and preparing to step into a leadership role at one of the country's largest corporations, I realized that the nightmare had been nothing more than a harsh, necessary lesson.

Dominic had tried to break me, but in doing so, he had only awakened the full, unstoppable power of who I truly was.
