Chapter 13 - LEGACY OF STRENGTH

-13-
A year after the deposition that destroyed Vance Technologies, Brooks Global Corporation hosted its annual global charity gala at the sprawling estate grounds. The event brought together international leaders, philanthropists, and innovators to celebrate a milestone year of technological advancement and community support.
The grand marquee erected across the south lawn was illuminated by thousands of fairy lights, casting a warm, golden glow over the immaculate gardens. Inside, string quartet music drifted softly through the air as guests mingled, discussed future philanthropic initiatives, and admired the stunning autumn floral arrangements.
I stood near the entrance of the marquee, wearing a breathtaking midnight-blue silk evening gown that hugged my silhouette with quiet elegance. My hair was styled in a sophisticated updo, and my diamond pendant necklace caught the light with every subtle movement.
My father walked up, handing me a glass of sparkling cider with a warm smile. "The foreign ministers from the European delegation were just asking about your keynote address tomorrow. They are eager to partner with our new sustainable tech initiative."
"They'll find our proposal competitive," I replied, taking a small sip of the cider. "Our research division has outpaced every market expectation this quarter."
"That's because you lead with vision rather than ego," my father noted proudly, glancing out at the crowded marquee. "You know, looking around tonight, I am reminded of how much has changed in just one year. You took a shattered life and rebuilt it into something magnificent."
"I didn't do it alone, Dad," I said, meeting his eyes with deep gratitude. "You and Marcus gave me the tools to stand my ground when I needed it most."
Across the lawn, near the edge of the private rose gardens, I spotted my son Leo—now a energetic toddler taking confident steps alongside our trusted estate nanny, chasing glowing fireflies in the cool autumn air. He let out a joyful squeal as a firefly danced just out of reach, his laughter carrying across the quiet evening breeze.
A quiet sense of profound peace settled over me. The dark days of my marriage to Dominic Vance felt like a distant, faded chapter in a book I had long since finished reading.
As the gala progressed, several high-profile executives approached to congratulate me on the corporation's unprecedented success. Among them was Thomas Sterling, the veteran CEO of Sterling Global Enterprises and a longtime friend of my father's.
"Director Brooks," Thomas said, extending his hand with a respectful nod. "Your recent acquisition strategy in the renewable energy sector has completely revolutionized the industry. Even my board has been studying your playbook."
"Thank you, Thomas," I replied, shaking his hand firmly. "Innovation requires looking past conventional limitations and refusing to let temporary setbacks dictate long-term vision."
"Well said," Thomas laughed warmly. "If half the young entrepreneurs in the tech sector had your discipline, we wouldn't see half the corporate collapses we've witnessed lately. Speaking of which... whatever happened to that flashy startup your ex-husband tried to run? Vance... something or other?"
"Vance Technologies," I replied smoothly, a faint, enigmatic smile touching my lips. "It underwent a... sudden and permanent corporate restructuring."

"Ah, yes," Thomas chuckled, nodding knowingly as though piecing together whispered rumors from the financial district. "I heard they crashed hard. Some kind of federal fraud investigation, wasn't it? Serves the arrogant fellow right. Men like that always think they can build an empire on borrowed money and hot air."
"Indeed," I agreed quietly, looking out across the sparkling lawn where Leo was now safely resting in his grandfather's arms. "Some foundations simply aren't built to withstand the truth."
