Chapter 12 - ECHOES OF THE PAST

-12-
Six months after Dominic’s humiliating appearance at our front gates, life at the Brooks estate had achieved a harmonious, unshakeable rhythm. Leo was now walking, taking his first tentative, wobbly steps across the hardwood floors of the nursery while laughing with unadulterated joy as his grandfather cheered him on.
I had settled completely into my role as Managing Director of Innovation and Strategic Acquisitions at Brooks Global. Under my leadership, the corporation had successfully closed three major international tech partnerships and launched a groundbreaking sustainable infrastructure initiative that made headlines across financial markets worldwide.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, while reviewing a stack of international patent filings in my private study, my secure phone chimed with an encrypted notification from our legal counsel.
Marcus Vance appeared on the secure video feed, his expression professional yet carrying a faint note of closure.
"Good afternoon, Audrey," Marcus greeted politely.
"Good afternoon, Marcus," I replied, setting my pen down. "What brings you to my screen today? Is there an issue with the Southeast Asian acquisitions?"
"Not at all, acquisitions are proceeding flawlessly," Marcus assured me, adjusting his glasses. "I am calling because I received a formal communication from the federal correctional facility regarding Dominic Vance."
I paused, leaning back slightly in my leather chair. "Did something happen to him?"
"He has officially completed the first phase of his prison sentence and, due to his exemplary compliance and severe financial restitution demands, has been transferred to a remote work-release program in a different state," Marcus explained, pulling up a digital file on his screen. "Furthermore, his attorney reached out to inquire whether you would be willing to sign a final waiver relinquishing any remaining civil claims regarding unpaid spousal support or minor assets."
I let out a quiet, indifferent sigh. "There are no remaining civil claims, Marcus. I took everything that mattered when we dissolved Vance Technologies. Tell his attorney to process the final paperwork and ensure he is permanently barred from filing any future petitions concerning Leo or my personal estate."
"Done," Marcus said smoothly. "I anticipated your instructions and drafted the final injunction this morning. It will be fully executed by tomorrow."
"Thank you, Marcus."
After ending the video call, I walked over to the window and looked out across the misty rose gardens. The rain tapped softly against the reinforced glass, creating a soothing, meditative soundtrack to the quiet afternoon.
I thought back briefly to the frightened, exhausted woman standing outside the hospital entrance months ago—holding a newborn baby while her husband drove away in a luxury SUV, telling her to take a city bus. It felt like a lifetime ago, happening to a different person in a completely different world.
That woman no longer existed. In her place stood Audrey Brooks—a mother, a corporate leader, and a woman who commanded her own destiny with absolute authority.
Just then, the study door opened softly, and my father walked in, holding a laughing, energetic Leo in his arms.
"Look who learned how to say 'Grandpa' today," my father announced proudly, his face lit up with a beaming smile as he handed the toddler over to me.
I scooped Leo up into my arms, pressing a soft kiss to his cheek as he giggled and wrapped his tiny arms around my neck.
"Did you say 'Grandpa'?" I asked playfully, tickling his tummy as he burst into peals of laughter.
My father watched us, leaning against the edge of the mahogany desk with a deeply content expression. "You know, looking at you both, I realize something. Every storm we weather only makes the foundation deeper."

"And stronger," I added softly, looking down into my son's bright, intelligent eyes.
We had built an empire of our own—one that no amount of arrogance, deceit, or betrayal could ever touch.
