Chapter 3 - THE AWAKENING AT THE MANSION

The heavy iron gates of the Brooks estate swung open automatically as our vehicle approached, welcoming us back into a world of timeless, unshakeable security. Situated on a sprawling estate overlooking the northern ridge of the city, the main manor was a masterpiece of classic architecture—surrounded by centuries-old oaks, private gardens, and state-of-the-art perimeter defenses that could withstand virtually any threat.
When the car rolled to a stop beneath the grand portico, the front doors opened instantly. My father, Charles Brooks, stood on the threshold. Despite his sixty-five years, he maintained the commanding posture of a man who had built an industrial empire from the ground up. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his sharp, steel-gray eyes scanned the vehicle the moment it parked.
The lead security operative stepped out and opened my door, holding the large umbrella steady. I carefully stepped out into the crisp night air, cradling Leo against my chest.
Before I could take a step toward the steps, my father strode down the portico, his usual stoic expression softening as he looked at his grandson and then at me. For the first time in years, the formidable industrialist looked simply like a grandfather and a fiercely protective father.
"Let me see him," my father said softly, extending his arms.
I carefully transferred sleeping Leo into his grandfather's strong, steady embrace. Charles looked down at the tiny infant, a rare, gentle smile touching the corners of his mouth.
"Welcome home, little man," my father murmured, pressing a soft kiss to the baby's forehead before looking up at me. His eyes turned hard and cold again, fixing on the pale exhaustion etched across my face. "And you, Audrey. You look like you've been through a war. Come inside immediately. The medical team is waiting in the east wing."
"Thank you, Dad," I whispered, the sudden wave of relief making my knees feel weak.
The east wing of the manor had been temporarily converted into a private recovery suite complete with a dedicated neonatal nurse, a postnatal specialist, and all the equipment necessary to ensure Leo and I received world-class care. Within minutes of entering the warm, elegantly appointed suite, the medical professionals took over, gently checking my incision, monitoring my vital signs, and ensuring Leo was warm, fed, and sleeping soundly in a handcrafted mahogany bassinet.
As I sat propped up against a stack of goose-down pillows, sipping a warm cup of herbal tea, my father walked into the room, followed by our senior legal counsel, Marcus Vance—no relation to Dominic, thankfully, though the coincidence had always amused me.
Marcus was a sharp, impeccably dressed attorney who had managed Brooks Global Corporation's legal affairs for over three decades. He carried a leather briefcase, his expression entirely neutral, ready for business.
"Good evening, Audrey," Marcus said, taking a seat in the velvet armchair beside my bed. "I am deeply sorry you were subjected to such treatment, but I assure you, my team is already moving to dismantle every single legal leverage Mr. Vance believes he holds."
"Tell me where we stand, Marcus," I said, setting my teacup down on the bedside table.
"When you married Dominic Vance two years ago, we drafted a comprehensive prenuptial agreement at your request," Marcus began, opening his leather portfolio and pulling out a certified copy of the document. "At the time, you insisted on protecting Dominic's fragile ego by keeping your true family background confidential, and you allowed him to draft a standard mutual waiver of spousal support, believing it demonstrated your commitment to building a life together independently."
My father grunted softly from the corner of the room, crossing his arms over his chest. "A romantic mistake you won't be repeating, I trust."
"Indeed," Marcus continued, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. "However, what Dominic and his opportunistic family failed to realize is that the prenuptial agreement contains a strict moral turpitude and abandonment clause specifically drafted to protect your personal safety and well-being. Furthermore, the black luxury SUV he drove off in today was registered exclusively under Brooks Global Holdings as a corporate lease assigned to you personally. The moment he abandoned you and your newborn at a public bus stop while utilizing corporate and personal assets for unauthorized personal leisure, he breached multiple clauses of both civil conduct and asset usage."
I leaned forward slightly, feeling a surge of vindication. "What does that mean for his company?"
"It means his startup, Vance Technologies, is entirely dependent on venture capital funding that was quietly backed by a subsidiary shell company belonging to Brooks Global," Marcus explained, a faint smirk playing on his lips. "Dominic thought his brilliance closed those multi-million-dollar funding rounds last year. He had no idea that our investment committee approved his pitch decks solely because I instructed them to do so under your personal directive."
A cold thrill ran down my spine. "So if we pull the funding..."
"His company collapses within forty-eight hours," Marcus stated flatly. "Without our capital infusion, his payroll bounces next week, his lease on the downtown tech incubator gets terminated for default, and his major institutional investors—who only jumped in because they saw Brooks Global anchoring the table—will pull out in a panic."

My father walked over to the foot of the bed, resting his hands on the mahogany frame. His gaze was fierce, unyielding, and absolute.
"He wanted to play the successful businessman," my father said, his voice dropping into a low, menacing rumble. "He wanted to act like a self-made titan who could treat his wife like garbage because he thought he held all the cards. Tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, we are going to show him exactly what happens when a man builds a house of cards on top of a fault line."
