Chapter 7 - The Trap Closes

-7-
The heavy steel door clicked shut behind Marcus, sealing us inside the subterranean laboratory like rats in a trap. The two tactical guards stepped forward, blocking the only exit, their hands resting casually on the tasers at their belts.
I stood frozen halfway between the entrance and the medical chair where Chloe was still nervously strapped down, her chest heaving with silent sobs.
“Let her go, Marcus,” I said, my voice echoing off the sterile tile walls, steady despite the adrenaline hammering against my ribs. “This has nothing to do with her. It’s between you and me.”
Marcus let out a dry, humorless laugh, walking slowly toward me with his hands tucked into the pockets of his tailored trousers. He looked entirely in control, radiating the arrogant confidence of a man who believed money and power could rewrite reality itself.
“You think this is a personal dispute, Elena?” Marcus shook his head, stepping closer until I could smell the expensive sandalwood cologne he wore. “You have no idea the magnitude of what you’ve stumbled into. This isn't just about a divorce or an affair. This is a multi-million-dollar clinical partnership with global pharmaceutical conglomerates. Oakridge Academy’s endowment is funded by these trials, and Chloe... well, Chloe possesses a rare neurological marker that makes her cognitive responses exceptionally valuable to our research.”
“You’re experimenting on children?!” I shouted, the horror of his words piercing straight through my chest. “She’s your own daughter, you monster!”
“Science requires sacrifice, Elena,” Marcus replied coldly, showing not a shred of remorse. “And children are remarkably adaptable. Now... hand over the flash drive. The original one you stole from my study. If you give it to me right now, I’ll let you walk out of here alive, and I’ll even let you keep visitation rights under strict supervision.”
I stared into his cold, dead eyes—the same eyes I had trusted for eleven years—and felt a profound wave of disgust wash over me.
“You won’t get the flash drive, Marcus,” I said quietly, a faint smile touching the corners of my lips. “And you won’t be walking out of here either.”
Marcus’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “What are you talking about?”
Before he could answer, a loud, synthesized chime echoed through the laboratory’s intercom system, followed by an automated digital voice:
“Warning. Federal data upload initiated. Mirror transmission complete to Department of Justice servers in Washington D.C.”
Marcus spun around, his face draining of all color as he stared at the main diagnostic console across the room. The monitor was flashing a bright green confirmation screen: Data Packet Transmitted Successfully. Total Files: 4,892.
“What did you do?!” Marcus roared, lunging forward with a speed I had never seen in him before.
“I didn't just steal your flash drive last night, Marcus,” I said, stepping backward as the security guards rushed to restrain me. “Sarah and I mirrored the entire server database before you even realized the false bottom had been opened. By the time you woke up this morning, your entire criminal enterprise was already sitting in the hands of federal prosecutors.”
Marcus grabbed me by the shoulders, his fingers digging painfully into my skin as his composure completely shattered. “You ruined everything! You ruined years of work!”
“No, Marcus,” a cool, calm voice interrupted from the doorway.
The heavy steel door swung open once more. Standing in the frame wasn't Victoria Vance, but a tall, imposing man in a dark federal windbreaker bearing bold yellow letters across the back: FBI – SPECIAL AGENT IN CHARGE.
Behind him stood half a dozen armed federal agents, their badges gleaming under the harsh fluorescent lights, flanked by local police and my neighbor Sarah, who offered me a reassuring, victorious nod from the hallway.
“Marcus Sterling, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, medical malpractice, child endangerment, and conspiracy against federal statutes,” the lead FBI agent announced, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs gleaming in his hand.
Marcus tried to pull away, lunging toward the door, but the two tactical guards in his employ immediately stepped aside, raising their hands in surrender as federal agents swarmed the room.
Within seconds, Marcus was forced down onto the sterile tile floor, the cold steel handcuffs snapping shut around his wrists with a definitive, beautiful click.
As they hauled him away, kicking and screaming obscenities about his lawyers and his influence, Special Agent Vance walked over to Chloe’s medical chair and quickly unlocked the leather restraints with a small brass key.

Chloe rubbed her bruised wrists, looked up at me with wide, tear-filled eyes, and launched herself directly into my arms. I caught her tightly, burying my face in her hair as tears of pure relief streamed down my cheeks.
“We’re safe, baby,” I whispered, holding her close against my chest. “Mom’s got you. And nobody will ever hurt you again.”
