Chapter 6 - The Subterranean Labyrinth

-6-

The service entrance of Oakridge Academy was unguarded during the morning rush, as security personnel were entirely focused on the front gates and vehicular drop-off zones. Keeping my head down, I slipped through the heavy metal fire door and descended the concrete stairwell leading into the subterranean utility and storage levels of the campus.

The air down here was damp, smelling of old concrete, floor wax, and chemical disinfectants. Fluorescent light tubes buzzed overhead, casting a harsh, flickering glow across long stretches of industrial piping.

According to the encrypted schematics I had managed to pull from the flash drive during our late-night review in Sarah’s car, Marcus’s private subterranean laboratory was located directly beneath the school’s grand auditorium, accessible only through a reinforced security door disguised as an electrical maintenance closet.

I walked quietly down the narrow corridor, my boots making soft echoes against the concrete floor. As I turned the corner, I spotted it: Door 42B, marked with a yellow high-voltage warning sign.

I reached out and tested the handle. Locked, as expected.

However, the digital keypad beside the frame wasn't a standard corporate lock—it was a biometric scanner paired with a four-digit manual override code. Remembering the administrative access codes listed in the appendix of the stolen financial ledgers, I quickly punched in Victoria Vance’s override sequence: 8-4-2-9-Star.

A soft green indicator light flashed, and the heavy steel door unlatched with a pneumatic hiss.

I pulled the door open and stepped inside, my breath catching in my throat as the true scale of what Marcus and Victoria were hiding was finally laid bare before my eyes.

The room was vast, sterile, and lit by blinding white LED panels. Rows of stainless-steel refrigerators, clinical centrifuges, and rows of glass vials filled with a clear blue liquid lined the walls. In the center of the room stood a row of medical examination chairs equipped with leather restraints and neurological monitoring headsets.

And strapped into one of the chairs near the back of the room, looking pale, exhausted, and terrified, was Chloe.

“Mom?!” Chloe gasped, her eyes widening in disbelief as she struggled against the leather straps binding her wrists.

“Chloe! Hang on, I’m getting you out of here!” I cried, rushing across the sterile tile floor toward her chair.

Before I could reach the release latch on her restraints, the heavy steel door behind me swung open with a loud slam.

Marcus stood in the doorway, flanked by two burly private security guards in black tactical gear. His face was a mask of cold, calculating fury.

“Well, Elena,” Marcus said, stepping slowly into the laboratory with a terrifying, mocking smile. “I always underestimated your stubbornness. But walking straight into a cage? That’s just plain foolish.”
