Chapter 10 - Shadows of the Past

-10-

Even with Marcus behind bars and the federal investigation drawing to a close, the psychological ghosts of the past did not vanish overnight. There were nights when I still woke up in a cold sweat, reaching across an empty bed, half-expecting to hear his cold, measured footsteps echoing down the hallway.

Chloe experienced them too, though she processed them in her own quiet way. Sometimes, when a car door slammed too hard in the driveway or when someone raised their voice unexpectedly at the grocery store, she would instinctively flinch, her small hands curling into tight fists as if bracing for an impact that would never come again.

We knew healing took time. We enrolled in weekly family counseling sessions with a wonderful, trauma-informed therapist named Dr. Aris, who helped Chloe reclaim her voice through creative art therapy and open dialogue.

One rainy Tuesday afternoon, while Chloe was at her new neighborhood public school—a vibrant, inclusive place where parents were actually welcomed into classrooms rather than locked out—I received an unexpected visitor.

The doorbell rang just as I was folding a load of warm laundry in the living room. I walked to the front door, peered through the frosted glass window, and saw a woman standing on the porch, drenched from the downpour, clutching a worn leather handbag to her chest.

I opened the door cautiously. Standing before me was Evelyn Vance—Victoria Vance’s older sister, whom I had only ever seen briefly in passing during high-society charity functions years ago.

Evelyn looked nothing like her sister. Where Victoria was polished, arrogant, and impeccably styled, Evelyn looked ragged, exhausted, and desperately afraid.

“Elena,” Evelyn breathed, her voice trembling as rain dripped from the brim of her trench coat. “Please... I know I have no right to show up here after everything my family put you and Chloe through. But I didn't know. I swear to God, I had no idea what Victoria and Marcus were doing in that basement.”

I crossed my arms over my chest, eyeing her warily. “Why are you here, Evelyn? How did you even find this house?”

“My sister’s legal team turned over her personal effects to the family last week,” Evelyn said, stepping back slightly as thunder rumbled overhead. “Among her things, I found a secondary safety-deposit box key, along with a handwritten ledger addressed directly to you. Victoria left instructions... if she was ever arrested or betrayed by Marcus, I was supposed to hand this over to you as an insurance policy.”

My pulse quickened. A secondary ledger? I thought we had seized everything during the federal raid.

“Show me,” I said firmly, stepping back to open the door wider. “Come inside out of the rain. But make it quick.”

Evelyn stepped into the entryway, shivering as she unzipped her wet coat. She unlatched her leather handbag, reached deep inside, and pulled out a heavy, red-leather-bound journal with a gold-embossed lock on the cover. She placed it gently on the entryway console table.

“Victoria was terrified of Marcus,” Evelyn whispered, wiping rainwater from her forehead. “She thought she was the mastermind of the Vance-Sterling operations, but toward the end, she realized Marcus was using her as the primary scapegoat all along. If federal prosecutors ever dug deep enough, Victoria was meant to take the entire fall while Marcus walked away clean. That journal contains names of other high-profile investors and board members who haven't been exposed yet—people who are still trying to cover their tracks.”

I stared at the red leather journal. The nightmare wasn't fully over. There were still tentacles of Marcus’s corporate syndicate buried deep within the political and financial elite of Greenwich, waiting for an opportunity to strike back.

“Thank you, Evelyn,” I said quietly, picking up the journal. “I’ll make sure the FBI receives this immediately.”

Evelyn nodded, turning back toward the door with tears welling in her eyes. As she stepped out into the rain, I locked the deadbolt behind her, knowing full well that our quiet new life was about to be tested once again.
