Chapter 11 - The Ghost in the System

-11-

The red leather journal Evelyn left behind was a Pandora’s box of systemic corruption. When I handed it over to Special Agent Vance the following morning, the federal task force reopened its secondary investigation lines, realizing that Marcus Sterling was merely a regional lieutenant in a much larger, transnational syndicate operating across the northeastern seaboard.

Within days, shockwaves rippled through the corporate boards of Greenwich once again. Two prominent real estate magnates and a sitting state senator who had quietly accepted campaign donations from Vance-Sterling Holdings abruptly announced their early retirements, citing "personal health reasons."

For a brief period, Chloe and I lived under heightened security. Federal marshals parked an unmarked sedan down the street from our Victorian home, monitoring visitors and patrolling the neighborhood perimeter.

Yet, as the weeks passed without incident, the tension began to ease. The marshals packed up their gear and departed, leaving us to resume our peaceful routines.

One evening in late November, while reviewing some administrative paperwork for the community center’s upcoming winter art drive at my kitchen table, my laptop screen suddenly flickered.

The active document minimized itself, replaced by a command-line terminal window opening automatically. A string of green text began scrolling rapidly across the black background:

INTRUSION DETECTED: SECURE_LINK_ESTABLISHED.

LOCAL IP ROUTING: 127.0.0.1 -> PROXY_NODE_GREENWICH_04.

MESSAGE INCOMING...

My breath hitched. I reached for my phone to call Special Agent Vance, but before I could dial, a chat window popped up on the center of the screen. There was no sender name, only a blinking cursor and a single line of text typed out in real-time:

“You think cutting off a branch kills the tree, Elena? Marcus was just a caretaker. The roots go much deeper than you will ever comprehend. Stop digging before you find out what happened to the mothers who came before you.”

A cold shiver raced down my spine. Someone was inside my home network, monitoring my device from a local proxy node.

Before I could screenshot the window, the terminal screen flashed red, displayed a rapid self-destruction sequence, and wiped the chat log clean, leaving my desktop completely normal as if nothing had ever happened.

I sat back in my chair, my heart pounding against my ribs. “The mothers who came before you.”

May you like

What did that mean? Had there been someone before me—someone who tried to expose Marcus and Victoria years ago, only to vanish without a trace before the public ever knew she existed?

I picked up my phone and dialed Sarah’s number instead of the FBI. If there was a ghost hidden in the history of Oakridge Academy, I needed someone I could trust implicitly to help me hunt it down before Marcus’s unseen associates made their next move.
