Chapter 5 - The Entry of Uncle Marcus5 -

With the teenagers safely inside the house, the backyard felt significantly larger, quieter, and infinitely more dangerous for Jordan and Percy. The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly, but the chill radiating from Jordan was palpable. He sat slumped in the patio chair like a deflated balloon, staring blankly at the concrete pavers beneath his designer loafers.
Percy was pacing back and forth like a caged tiger, her stiletto heels clicking sharply against the stone. "This is a nightmare," she muttered under her breath, glaring daggers at Jordan. "I'm calling my lawyer. I had nothing to do with your corporate fraud. You used me!"
"Oh, you're free to call whoever you want, Percy," a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the sliding glass patio door.
We all turned to see Marcus stepping out onto the deck. Dressed in a sharp charcoal suit that looked entirely out of place at a backyard barbecue, Marcus exuded the calm, calculated aura of an apex predator who had just cornered his prey. In his hand, he carried a thick leather briefcase.
Jordan looked up slowly, his eyes widening in sudden, absolute terror as recognition set in. "Marcus... Marcus Vance? You're... you're a federal prosecutor... well, you used to be. You're corporate counsel for—"
"For Apex Industries' primary competitor, yes," Marcus finished smoothly, walking down the steps with slow, measured strides until he stood right beside Clark and me. He flipped open his briefcase, revealing stacks of printed financial ledgers, signed affidavits, and official legal notices. "And I'm also Sarah’s retained private legal strategist. Jordan, you really should have checked who your ex-wife went to college with before you decided to fleece her in the divorce proceedings."
Jordan swallowed hard, his throat dry. "I... I didn't know..."
"Obviously," Marcus retorted with a cold, sarcastic smile. "Men of your particular brand of arrogance rarely do. You assumed Sarah was weak. You assumed she would take the pittance you offered, stay home with the baby, and quietly fade into the background while you played CEO with a woman half your age. But you forgot one fundamental rule of corporate and marital warfare: never back a desperate mother into a corner unless you're prepared to lose everything."
Percy stopped pacing. Her eyes darted between Marcus, Clark, and Jordan, her survival instinct kicking into overdrive. "Listen to me," she snapped, pointing a manicured finger at Marcus. "I am just an employee. Jordan was my boss. He coerced me. I didn't know anything about offshore accounts or fraudulent expense reports!"
"Really, Percy?" Marcus raised an eyebrow, pulling a single sheet of paper from his briefcase and holding it out. "Because corporate HR records show that your salary was quadrupled over the past twelve months, despite your job description remaining that of a standard administrative assistant. Furthermore, the lease agreement for your luxury apartment bears your co-signature alongside Jordan’s corporate credit card authorization form. That’s not coercion, my dear. That’s conspiracy."
Percy let out a sharp, choked gasp, snatching the paper from Marcus’s hand and scanning it with frantic eyes. The color drained from her face a second time, matching Jordan’s ghostly pallor. She slowly turned her head to glare at Jordan, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "You lied to me. You told me the company owned that apartment legally. You lied to me about everything."

"Percy, please, we can fix this—" Jordan pleaded weakly, reaching out a trembling hand.
"Fix this? We're ruined!" Percy screamed, her voice cracking with fury. Without another word, she spun on her heel, kicked off her stiletto heels in pure frustration, and bolted toward the front gate, leaving Jordan completely alone on the battlefield he had so arrogantly entered just twenty minutes ago.
