Chapter 9 - The Interrogation Cell

9 - 15
The air inside Interrogation Room 3B of the Federal District Attorney’s facility smelled of stale coffee, cold concrete, and palpable fear. Underneath the harsh glare of a single overhead fluorescent bulb, Paulina Robles sat handcuffed to a bolted metal table, her designer silk blouse wrinkled, her hair undone, and her face entirely stripped of the haughty, untouchable elegance that had once defined her in the halls of the Villaseñor mansion.
The heavy steel door swung open with a loud, metallic clatter.
Paulina jerked her head up, expecting to see a public defender or a federal investigator. Instead, her breath hitched violently in her throat as she saw Diego rolling slowly into the room, his left arm in a sling, his dark eyes fixed on her with the chilling, emotionless weight of an executioner. Behind him stood Commander Ramos, locking the door firmly from the inside.
Diego didn't speak. He wheeled himself right up to the opposite side of the metal table, resting his good hand flat on the cold steel surface, staring down at the woman he had once planned to marry.
“Diego!” Paulina sobbed instantly, putting on a theatrical display of tears as she leaned forward, rattling her handcuffs against the table. “Oh, thank God! You have to get me out of here! These people are insane, they’ve treated me like a common criminal, they—!”
“Shut up, Paulina,” Diego interrupted. His voice wasn't loud. It wasn't angry. It was terrifyingly quiet—the sound of ice cracking over deep water.
Paulina stopped mid-sentence, her lower lip trembling as she stared into his cold, dead eyes.
“I read the federal forensic reports on the way over,” Diego continued smoothly, tapping a single finger against the metal table. “I saw the wire transfer logs. I saw the encrypted communications between your private offshore accounts and Valeria’s syndicate terminal. I watched the security footage of you helping smuggle tactical gear into my service basement three days ago.”
Paulina’s face drained of all color. The tearful facade melted away in an instant, replaced by a desperate, cornered panic.
“Diego, listen to me, I can explain,” she babbled frantically, shaking her head. “Morales forced me! They threatened my family! They said if I didn't infiltrate your house and keep tabs on your personal life, they would ruin my father’s business! I was just a pawn, Diego! I loved you!”
“You loved the diamond ring on your finger,” Diego corrected her, his voice cutting through her lies like a scalpel. “You loved the penthouse apartments in Santa Fe, the private jets, and the status of being Mrs. Villaseñor. But you made one fatal mistake, Paulina.”
Paulina swallowed hard, her voice barely a whisper. “What... what mistake?”
“You underestimated a mother’s love,” Diego said, leaning closer across the table. “And you underestimated my daughter. If you had just treated Marisol and Valentina with basic human decency—if you hadn't tried to throw them out into the street like trash—none of this would have happened. Your arrogance forced the issue. Your hatred exposed your own conspiracy.”
Paulina slumped back in her metal chair, her eyes wide with sheer horror as she realized that her entire multi-million-dollar betrayal had collapsed simply because she couldn't tolerate a three-year-old child playing with a golden button in a hallway.
“You’re going away for a very long time, Paulina,” Diego said, slowly wheeling his chair backward toward the door. “Along with Morales, Valeria, and every single one of your corporate co-conspirators. The board of directors has already been restructured. My lawyers are seizing every asset registered in your name before the sun sets today.”
“Diego, no! You can't do this to me! You loved me!” Paulina screamed, lunging forward across the table as Commander Ramos unlocked the heavy door.

“I never knew you,” Diego said without turning around. “And now, I never have to try.”
He rolled out of the interrogation room, the heavy steel door slamming shut behind him with a final, definitive thud, sealing Paulina’s fate in the dark history of the Villaseñor empire.
