While the gala continued with music, laughter, and celebration inside the illuminated ballroom, miles away in the damp, industrial outskirts of Santa Fe, a very different kind of meeting was taking place.
Parked in the shadows behind an abandoned railway warehouse sat an unmarked white van. Inside, two men stared intently at a high-definition laptop screen streaming live drone footage of the Santa Fe Convention Center.
“Look at him,” the driver muttered, his face illuminated by the eerie blue glow of the screen. “Laughing, dancing, playing the proud father. He really thinks he’s untouchable now that Morales and Valeria are locked up.”
The second man, sitting in the passenger seat with a dark scarf wrapped around his neck, let out a slow, menacing exhale of cigarette smoke.
“Let him celebrate,” the second man rasped, his eyes narrowing as he watched Diego spinning Marisol gently across the ballroom dance floor while Valentina clapped her hands gleefully nearby. “Pride always comes before the fall. The board has approved Phase Two.”
“Phase Two?” the driver asked, glancing over nervously. “Are we hitting the mansion again?”
“No. Too predictable. Security at Las Lomas is locked down tighter than a military bunker right now,” the man in the scarf smiled coldly, tapping the screen with a gloved finger, right over the image of little Valentina laughing in her mother’s arms. “We strike where they feel safest. Next week, the foundation is hosting an outdoor charity picnic in the central park. That’s where the real game begins.”
The driver swallowed hard, nodding slowly. “And the girl?”

“The girl is the key to everything,” the man whispered into the dark interior of the van. “When Diego loses her, he loses his mind. And when he loses his mind, the Villaseñor empire will finally fall right into our hands.”
The van’s engine revbed quietly in the dark, slipping away into the rainy night like a ghost, leaving behind a cold, threatening omen that the storm had not yet truly passed.
