Chapter 15 - The Eternal Vow

15 - 15
Back at the Villaseñor mansion in Las Lomas de Chapultepec, the heavy iron front gates swung closed behind the returning convoy of black sedans, sealing the grand estate in a cocoon of absolute safety and peace.
Inside the nursery—a newly renovated, warm room filled with pastel colors, soft toys, and a tiny white bed—Marisol gently tucked Valentina in under a quilt embroidered with little yellow ducks. The little girl yawned sleepily, her eyelids growing heavy as she clutched her favorite stuffed rabbit against her chest.
“Goodnight, my angel,” Marisol whispered, pressing a tender kiss to Valentina’s forehead.
“Goodnight, Mommy,” Valentina murmured softly, drifting off into a peaceful sleep.
Marisol turned off the main overhead light, leaving only a soft star-shaped nightlight glowing in the corner, and quietly closed the bedroom door.
Waiting in the dimly lit hallway leaned against the wall with his hands in his pockets was Diego. He watched her approach, a soft, loving smile playing on his lips.
“Is she asleep?” Diego asked softly.
“Like a little angel,” Marisol whispered, stepping into his open arms.
Diego wrapped his arms securely around her, pulling her against his chest as they walked slowly down the carpeted hallway toward their master bedroom. The heavy mahogany doors stood open, revealing the moonlight pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the sprawling estate grounds outside.
Marisol rested her head against Diego’s shoulder, feeling the steady, reassuring beat of his heart.
“Diego?” she asked quietly.
“Hmm?”
“Do you ever look back at how we met... at everything that happened... and wonder what would have happened if I had never walked through those gates four years ago?”
Diego paused, pulling her just a fraction closer. He reached out, gently lifting her chin so she was looking directly into his eyes.
“If you hadn't walked through those gates, Marisol, I would still be living in a cage of glass and steel—surrounded by wealth, but completely empty inside,” Diego said, his voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable conviction. “You didn't just bring our daughter into my life. You brought me back to life.”
He leaned down, pressing his lips softly to hers in a tender, lingering kiss that sealed away all the fear, all the pain, and all the shadows of the past.

Outside, the wind whispered through the ancient trees of Las Lomas de Chapultepec, carrying the quiet promise of tomorrow. Whatever storms lay ahead on the horizon, whatever enemies lurked in the dark, Diego Villaseñor knew one thing with absolute certainty:
He had lost his family once. He would never, ever let them go again.
