Chapter 5 - The Breach in the Concrete Vault

5 - 15

The acrid smell of burnt alloy and superheated steel filled the cramped interior of the panic room instantly, stinging the eyes and clogging the throat. Marisol instinctively pulled Valentina down against the floor, wrapping her own body over the little girl’s small frame while keeping her trembling hand clamped around the grip of the pistol Diego had forced into her palm.

Diego didn't hesitate. He dropped to one knee, bringing his Sig Sauer up to eye level, training the barrel directly on the jagged hole torn through the upper corner of the steel door.

CLANG! CLANG!

Heavy crowbars slammed against the outside of the door, battering the weakened alloy frame. With a screech of tortured metal, the entire upper section of the reinforced steel door buckled inward, crashing onto the carpeted floor of the safe room in a cloud of dust and gray insulation foam.

Through the smoking breach, the scarred mercenary leader poked his tactical helmet through, his weapon leading the way.

BANG!

Diego fired instantly. The bullet struck the mercenary’s tactical helmet with a loud ping, spinning the man backward and sending him tumbling off the riser outside the panic room with a guttural curse.

“Clear the breach! Flashbangs!” an angry voice roared from the hallway.

“Get down!” Diego yelled, grabbing Marisol and shoving both of them behind the heavy steel medical cabinet in the corner of the room.

CRACK-FLASH!

A blinding magnesium flash grenade sailed through the jagged opening, detonating with a concussive shockwave that rattled every tooth in Diego’s head and filled the safe room with a piercing, high-pitched whine.

Before the ringing in his ears could fade, two operatives vaulted through the ruined doorway, their rifles sweeping the room.

Diego popped up from behind the console, firing twice in rapid succession. His first round caught the leading operative square in the tactical vest, dropping the man to his knees. But before he could adjust his aim for the second intruder, a heavy burst of suppressive fire slammed into the drywall above his head, showering him in plaster and forcing him back down behind cover.

“Mr. Villaseñor!” a voice sneered from the doorway—a voice that was cold, feminine, and terrifyingly familiar.

Diego froze. He peered around the edge of the medical cabinet.

Stepping through the ruined doorway, flanked by two armed operatives, was Valeria Vance.

She wasn't wearing her usual immaculate corporate business suit. Instead, she wore a sleek trench coat, her hair tied back in a sharp ponytail, holding a sleek corporate tablet in one hand and a suppressed pistol in the other. Her expression was completely devoid of emotion—a mask of chilling, calculated professional coldness.

“Valeria,” Diego spat out, his voice dripping with venom. “I should have known. Seven years of loyal service... and you were just a corporate assassin waiting for the right moment to cash out.”

Valeria let out a thin, sardonic smile. She adjusted her glasses, looking down at Diego with an expression of profound pity.

“Loyalty is for fools, Diego,” Valeria replied smoothly, her voice echoing in the concrete vault. “You thought you built this empire with your brilliant business mind. You thought your late-night strategy sessions and aggressive hostile takeovers made you a titan. But you never noticed the hands that held the strings behind your desk.”

“You sold our contracts to the highest bidder,” Diego said, his finger tightening on his trigger as he calculated the distance between them.

“I didn't sell them, Diego. I curated them,” Valeria corrected him sharply. “And three years ago, when a pathetic little maid got herself pregnant with your illegitimate child, I was the one who cleaned up your mess. I paid her off—or so I thought. I didn't expect her to crawl back into your mansion disguised in a maid’s uniform, playing the long game to secure a slice of the Villaseñor fortune.”

Marisol, hiding behind the medical cabinet with Valentina pressed against her chest, gasped aloud. “I didn't play any game! I didn't even know he owned this house until my first day on the job!”

Valeria’s cold eyes snapped toward the corner of the room. She stepped closer, raising her pistol toward the medical cabinet.

“Ah, the mother of the bastard heir,” Valeria purred, stepping over the fallen operative. “Such a tragic story. Two single mothers in a cruel world. Too bad neither of you is going to survive the afternoon to tell it.”

Valeria raised her weapon higher, aiming directly at the space between the medical cabinet and the wall where Marisol and Valentina cowered.

Diego’s heart stopped. Time seemed to fracture into slow motion. He knew he couldn't reach his weapon in time. He knew the math didn't work.

Unless...

With a sudden, explosive roar of raw paternal fury, Diego launched himself out from behind cover, throwing his entire body directly into Valeria’s path just as her finger began to squeeze the trigger.

CRACK!

A muffled gunshot echoed through the concrete vault.

A searing, burning agony tore through Diego’s left shoulder as the bullet slammed into his flesh, spinning him hard against the concrete wall and sending his own weapon clattering across the floor.

“Diego!” Marisol screamed in sheer horror, blood blooming across the fabric of Diego’s ruined shirt.

Valeria staggered back a step, regaining her balance with a cold, vicious snarl, pointing her pistol straight at Diego’s chest as he slid down the concrete wall.

“Heroism doesn't suit you, Diego,” Valeria whispered, her finger tightening on the trigger for the kill shot. “Say goodbye to your empire.”

Before Valeria could pull the trigger, a thunderous, concussive roar shook the entire foundations of the mansion from the courtyard outside, followed by the terrifying chatter of heavy-caliber automated defense turrets opening fire.
