Chapter 2 - The Hidden Diagnosis-2

The neon lights of Doernbecher Children's Hospital burned bright through the night. I sat in a hard plastic chair inside the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, staring through the glass panel at Ethan sleeping safely inside an incubator, connected to continuous oxygen and cardiac monitors.
At 4:00 AM, Dr. Aris Thorne, the chief of pediatric cardiology, walked into the room holding a digital tablet. His expression was heavy with serious concern.
"Mrs. Vance?" he asked quietly.
"How is my son, Dr. Thorne?"
"Ethan is stable now, thanks to your swift action," Dr. Thorne said, sitting down across from me. "However, his cyanosis wasn't caused by simple newborn breathing adjustment. Our echocardiogram revealed that Ethan has a congenital heart condition known as Transposition of the Great Arteries, combined with a severe metabolic anomaly."
My breathing caught. "A metabolic anomaly?"
"Yes," Dr. Thorne replied, zooming in on a blood work report. "We detected traces of a heavy sedative in his bloodstream—specifically, a liquid derivative of Diphenhydramine mixed with an industrial surfactant. In a newborn, this suppresses the central nervous system, stopping his natural respiratory drive."
A wave of nausea washed over me. "Sedatives? How could a three-day-old baby have sedatives in his system?"
Dr. Thorne hesitated, looking at me intently. "We ran a screening on the pre-mixed formula samples you brought in from your diaper bag—the ones provided by your mother-in-law."
"Theresa," I whispered, my blood running ice cold.
"The formula bottles were heavily spiked with the drug," Dr. Thorne confirmed sternly. "Mrs. Vance, this is a mandatory reporting situation. I have already contacted the Portland Police Department and Child Protective Services. This was not neglect. This was deliberate poisoning."
I sat in complete silence for three long minutes. The shock quickly yielded to a cold, razor-sharp focus.
Theresa hadn't just been dismissing my concerns—she had been systematically drugging my baby to make him appear weak and unresponsive, intentionally creating the symptoms so she could label me as "delusional" and "hysterical" when I panicked.
"Dr. Thorne," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "I need every chemical panel, every lab result, and a certified affidavit signed by your team. Keep Ethan under a john doe alias in the PICU records for the next forty-eight hours. Do not release any information if David Vance or Theresa Vance calls this hospital."
Dr. Thorne nodded grimly. "Consider it done. What are you going to do?"

I pulled out my encrypted phone and booted up my private forensic cloud server.
"I am going to find out why my mother-in-law wanted my newborn son out of the picture," I said. "And why my husband was so eager to help her do it."
