Chapter 15 - A New Beginning-15

Six months later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the lush green hills of Lake Oswego, just south of Portland.

I stood on the spacious back deck of my new home—a beautiful, light-filled craftsman house purchased entirely in my own name, surrounded by blooming flower gardens and towering pine trees.

Down on the lawn, ten-month-old Ethan was crawling happily across a soft picnic blanket, reaching for a colorful wooden toy.

Sitting nearby on the grass was Samantha Sterling, holding her newly born baby girl, Maya—Ethan's half-sister.

Over the past few months, Samantha and I had formed an unexpected, deep bond. We had both been lied to by the same man, but instead of letting his corruption destroy us, we chose to unite to raise our children together as family.

My lead attorney, Sarah Jenkins, walked out onto the deck holding a tray of iced tea.

"The final asset liquidation was completed this morning," Sarah smiled, handing me a glass. "David’s share of the marital assets has been legally transferred into an irrevocable trust for Ethan and Maya, managed jointly by you and Samantha."

"And Theresa's villa in Florida?" I asked, taking a slow sip.

"Seized by the federal government and auctioned off," Sarah laughed. "The proceeds were donated to the Doernbecher Pediatric Heart Foundation under Ethan’s name."

I looked out over the sunlit yard, watching Ethan laugh as Maya grabbed his tiny hand.

My phone buzzed on the table. It was a formal update from the Oregon Department of Corrections.

Inmate #40291 (David Vance): Appeal motion denied. Security clearance: Maximum Facility.

Inmate #40292 (Theresa Vance): Parole application rejected.

I locked the screen and set the phone down face-down on the table.

They had thought I was a helpless, hysterical woman trapped in a house without a phone, without money, and without options. They had assumed my love for my son would make me weak.

They never realized that a mother's love isn't just soft—it is a force that can burn down empires, expose every lie, and rewrite the future.

I walked down the porch steps onto the green grass, kneeling beside Ethan and Samantha, pulling my son into a warm, safe embrace under the clear blue sky.

We were safe. We were free. And our story was just beginning.
