Chapter 5 - The Shadows in the Ranks-5

The next morning, I returned to my official command duties at the Northwest Regional Military Headquarters.

Dressed in my crisp Army dress uniform with full Colonel insignia and ribbons displayed across my chest, I walked through the main gates. Guards saluted sharply as my vehicle passed through security checkpoints.

I entered the main briefing room, where General Thomas Vance and six senior staff officers were waiting.

Among them sat Major Victoria Vance, her eyes red-rimmed, her head held low in absolute shame.

"Attention on deck!" General Vance announced as I stepped up to the podium.

The officers stood at attention until I gestured for them to be seated.

"Colonel Whitmore," General Vance said, setting a legal folder on the conference table. "We have completed the internal Judge Advocate General (JAG) review regarding Major Victoria Vance’s conduct."

I looked at Victoria. "Major Vance, stand up."

Victoria stood up slowly, her hands trembling at her sides. "Yes, Colonel."

"Major," I said, my voice echoing through the silent room. "During the course of our financial audit into Mark Vance's fraudulent activities, we discovered that $150,000 of the stolen bank funds were deposited directly into a joint account registered under your name in San Diego."

Victoria gasped, her face turning pale as milk. "What?! No! Colonel, I didn't know where that money came from! Mark told me it was his company's annual profit dividend!"

"As an active-duty military officer," I stated sternly, "you are required to report all financial transfers exceeding ten thousand dollars from civilian entities under federal security clearance regulations. You failed to file a single disclosure form."

"Father... please..." Victoria looked at General Vance with wide, pleading eyes.

General Vance did not look back at her. His expression was cold, hard stone. "Do not address me as father in this briefing room, Major. You are addressing your commanding officer."

"Major Vance," I continued, "effective immediately, your Top Secret security clearance is suspended. You are relieved of all operational duties pending a formal Court-Martial for financial misconduct, conduct unbecoming an officer, and security compliance violations."

Victoria slumped back into her chair, burying her face in her hands, weeping silently.

She had spent months trying to climb the military hierarchy by aligning herself with what she thought was a wealthy civilian businessman, only to end up losing her commission, her reputation, and her freedom.

"Dismissed," General Vance ordered coldly.

As security personnel escorted Victoria out of the room, General Vance turned to me, his eyes filled with profound respect.

"Colonel Whitmore," he said, holding out his hand. "Thank you for handling this with absolute professionalism. My daughter made her choice. Now she will face the consequences."

"Thank you, General," I replied, shaking his hand firmly. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a final appointment with my ex-husband's legal team."
