Chapter 4 - The Desperate Plea-4

By Thursday morning, Mark’s world was exploding in real time.
He was currently staying in a cheap motel near the highway, his credit cards declined, his luxury sedan repossessed by the dealership due to missed payments I had previously covered, and his phone ringing endlessly with calls from furious debt collectors.
At 10:00 AM, my private terminal chimed. It was an incoming video call request from an unknown burner number.
I accepted the call.
Mark’s face appeared on my screen. He looked frantic, his hair unwashed, wearing a wrinkled shirt, standing outside a cramped motel room under the gray Oregon rain.
"Anna!" Mark gasped, clutching the phone with both hands. "Thank God you picked up! Anna, you have to help me! There are sheriffs at my office right now! They’re seizing everything! They say my loans are in default!"
"They are in default, Mark," I replied smoothly, leaning back in my leather office chair. "Because the primary checking account that maintained those credit lines was closed."
"You have to transfer five hundred thousand dollars to my business account right now!" Mark screamed into the camera, his voice cracking with sheer desperation. "If you don't, the bank is going to file criminal charges against me for wire fraud! They said my signature verifications failed!"
I looked at him through the screen with absolute detachment. "Why would I transfer money to a man who threw me out on the street while I was in labor?"
"BECAUSE I'M YOUR HUSBAND!" Mark shrieked. "WE'RE FAMILY! YOU HAVE TWENTY MILLION DOLLARS, ANNA! TWENTY MILLION! WHAT IS FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND TO YOU?! IT'S POCKET CHANGE!"
"It isn't about the money, Mark," I said softly. "It's about character. My grandfather worked fifty years to build that trust. He built it to protect people who build things, not parasites who tear them down."
"I made a mistake!" Mark wept, dropping his head into his hands. "Victoria manipulated me! She told me she loved me! She told me her father would make me a senior partner in military contracting if I left you!"
I laughed softly—a short, ironic sound. "Victoria Vance didn't manipulate you, Mark. You used her just like you tried to use me. You thought her father’s rank would give you access to military contracts, and you thought my silence meant I was weak."
"Anna, please..." Mark sobbed, dropping to his knees on the wet motel pavement. "I have nowhere to go! My mother won't take my calls! Victoria blocked my number! The bank is freezing everything! What am I supposed to do?!"
"You're going to do what you told me to do seven days ago, Mark," I said, holding his gaze through the lens.
Mark blinked through his tears. "What... what did I tell you?"
May you like
"You told me: 'That's not my problem.'"
I terminated the call, blocking the burner number permanently.
