Chapter 10 - The New Command-10
One year after the night Mark threw me out into the rain, I stood on the grand parade grounds of Fort Lewis under a clear, brilliant blue sky.
Surrounding the field were three thousand soldiers lined up in precise formation, their weapons glinting under the morning sun, banners fluttering in the crisp breeze.
Standing on the reviewing stand were senior Pentagon officials, regional commanders, and distinguished guests.
General Thomas Vance stepped up to the podium, holding a gold-embossed military commission certificate.
"Attention to orders!" the master of ceremonies announced over the loudspeakers.
The entire field went dead silent.
"The President of the United States has placed special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity, and abilities of Colonel Anna Whitmore," General Vance read aloud, his voice echoing across the parade grounds. "In recognition of her extraordinary leadership, operational excellence, and unwavering integrity, she is hereby promoted to the rank of Brigadier General, United States Army!"
A thunderous applause broke out across the grandstands.
I stepped forward to the center of the stage. My mother stood on my left, holding one-year-old Maya in her arms.
Together, General Vance and my mother pinned the single silver star of a General Officer onto my shoulder epaulets.
I turned to face the three thousand soldiers standing before me, snapped a crisp salute to the flag, and looked out over the crowd.
In the front row of the civilian gallery sat Mrs. Rivera—my elderly neighbor who had held my hand in the backseat of her car twelve months ago when I was gasping in labor on the way to the hospital.

As the brass military band began playing the Army Anthem, I held my head high, feeling the cool breeze against my face, knowing that every trial, every pain, and every betrayal I had endured had only forged me into something unshakeable.
