Chapter 3 - The Federal Intrusion

3 - 15
"Get that child out of the hallway," the woman in the charcoal suit commanded, her voice sharp and authoritative. She stepped fully out of Room 412, letting the door click half-shut behind her, effectively sealing off Sophia from her daughter’s view.
Marco moved instantly, positioning his broad frame between Emma and the federal agent, his hand resting firmly on the small of the girl’s back to guide her backward. "Nobody is touching the kid, Agent. You're in city limits, and this is a private hospital wing funded by Moretti capital. You're five minutes away from being escorted out by six precinct captains who take my Christmas cards very seriously."
The federal agent—whose badge identified her as Special Agent Valerie Vance—did not flinch. She adjusted the leather briefcase strap on her shoulder and looked past Marco directly at Alessandro. Her expression was a mask of cold, bureaucratic indifference.
"Mr. Moretti, your financial contributions to this hospital are a matter of public record," Agent Vance said, her voice dropping into a professional monotone. "So is the fact that Sophia Delgado has been employed by your household for four years. What isn't public record is the specific reason why Mrs. Delgado collapsed in the third-floor east corridor of your Fifth Avenue mansion yesterday morning."
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed. "She had pneumonia. Dr. Sterling just confirmed her diagnosis."
"Dr. Sterling manages pulmonary care, not chemical containment," Vance replied smoothly. She reached into her briefcase, extracted a folded manila folder stamped with red classification seals, and held it out. She didn't open it; she simply let Alessandro look at the bold black letters printed across the tab: PROJECT BLACKWOOD - CONTAINMENT BREACH - MANSION SECTOR 3.
The name hit Alessandro with the force of a physical blow. Project Blackwood. The very same ghost from the past that had haunted his father’s final years, the buried federal archive that Rachel Hayes had fought to expose just months ago. Alessandro had assumed the entire apparatus had been dismantled, shipped overseas, and buried under layers of judicial red tape.
"Sophia Delgado has never set foot in Sector 3," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "The east wing has been sealed since the remodeling in 2018."
"Has it?" Agent Vance raised an eyebrow. "According to our environmental sweep logs conducted by the local municipal water board—prompted by an anonymous tip filed yesterday afternoon—someone bypassed the sub-basement bulkhead beneath the old wine cellar. A bulkhead that hasn't been opened since the cold war, except by one person: the estate cleaning supervisor who managed the master key logs."
Emma tugged gently on the hem of Alessandro’s coat. Her small face was pale, her lower lip trembling slightly.
"Mr. Moretti... what are they saying about my mom?" she whispered. "Mom doesn't go in the basement. She's scared of the dark down there. I had to hold her hand when we went to get the spare vacuum bags from the utility closet."
Alessandro looked down at the child. The protective instinct that governed his entire empire flared into a white-hot flame. He knelt down once more, ignoring the hospital floor, and placed his hands gently on Emma’s small shoulders.
"Listen to me, Emma," Alessandro said, his voice steady and warm, completely cutting through the sterile terror of the hallway. "Your mother is a good woman. Nothing these people say changes that. Marco is going to take you down to the cafeteria, get you some hot chocolate, and wait for me. I'm going to go inside that room and talk to your mother myself."
"Can I see her first?" Emma asked, her eyes welling with tears that she stubbornly refused to let fall.
"Just for ten seconds," Alessandro promised.
He stood up, looking past Agent Vance with a gaze that made even the seasoned federal operative take an involuntary half-step back. He pushed Room 412's door open wide, stepping inside with Emma clutching his hand tightly, leaving Marco to stand guard against the federal agents in the doorway.

Sophia Delgado lay against the white pillows, her breathing shallow and raspy beneath the oxygen mask. Her eyes fluttered open as the door clicked shut. When she saw Alessandro standing beside her bed, followed by the small, familiar shape of her daughter, a tear slipped silently down her pale cheek.
And then, with a trembling hand, Sophia reached beneath her hospital gown, pulled out a small, heavy brass key on a frayed piece of yellow yarn, and pressed it directly into Alessandro’s palm.
