Chapter 10 - Shadows on the Balcony

10 - 15

The autumn chill deepened into the crisp, biting embrace of early November. On a Saturday evening, the Manhattan skyline shimmered across the dark waters of the Hudson River, a glowing constellation of steel and glass.

Alessandro stood alone on the private balcony outside his study, a glass of aged bourbon resting on the stone railing. Below him, the courtyard lights cast long, amber shadows across the cobblestones where delivery vans had once brought the quiet burdens of an underworld empire.

Marco stepped out onto the balcony, holding a heavy wool overcoat and draping it gently over Alessandro’s shoulders.

"You're out late, Boss," Marco said quietly, leaning against the stone balustrade. "The councilman’s delegate is waiting in the study to discuss the downtown port security contracts."

"Let him wait," Alessandro replied without turning around. "Some meetings deserve to marinate."

Marco smiled faintly, pulling a cigar from his breast pocket and lighting it with a small brass Zippo. "You’ve changed since the girl came through that door, Alessandro. The older capos are starting to talk. They say the Moretti family is getting soft."

Alessandro took a slow sip of his bourbon, feeling the warmth spread through his chest. "Soft? Let them try moving against the Westchester cottage, and we'll see how soft my security detail is."

"That isn't what I meant, and you know it," Marco said, exhaling a thin stream of blue smoke into the night air. "You used to view every person who walked onto this estate as a potential liability. Now you're setting up trust funds and hiring elementary school line leaders."

"A liability is someone who betrays you when the pressure mounts," Alessandro said, turning to look Marco dead in the eye. "Sophia Delgado was offered eighty thousand dollars and a clean slate to betray this house. She told them to go to hell. That isn't a liability, Marco. That is an asset more valuable than every diamond buried in our Swiss vaults."

Marco fell silent, acknowledging the unyielding truth of his boss’s words. In a world built on fear, betrayal, and conditional loyalty, finding someone who stood firm simply because it was right was rarer than finding gold in the gutter.

"By the way," Marco added, shifting his footing slightly. "The Westchester cottage is hosting a small family dinner tomorrow. Sophia invited us. Specifically, she said—and I quote—'Tell Mr. Moretti if he doesn't show up to eat my homemade lasagna, I'll send Emma down to clean his office windows with dirty water.'"

Alessandro stared at Marco for three seconds, then let out a deep, resonant laugh that echoed off the stone walls of the balcony—the sound of a man who had finally learned that power wasn't about the enemies you crushed, but the family you chose to protect.
