Chapter 11 - Sunday Dinner in Westchester

11 - 15
Sunday afternoon brought a rare, brilliant burst of autumn sunlight that warmed the frost-kissed lawns of Westchester. The black sedan pulled smoothly into the gravel drive of the recovery cottage, parking neatly beneath the canopy of red maples.
Alessandro stepped out, dressed more casually than usual in a dark cashmere turtleneck and tailored wool trousers, though he still carried the effortless authority of a man accustomed to commanding rooms full of dangerous people. Behind him, Marco carried a large gift basket filled with artisanal cheeses, imported chocolates, and a special box of imported Italian pastries for Emma.
Before they even reached the front steps, the wooden screen door flew open, and Emma bolted out onto the porch like a small, energetic missile.
"Mr. Moretti! Marco!" she cried out, skidding to a halt at the edge of the wooden landing, her yellow turtleneck sweater bright against the gray fieldstone walls.
Marco grinned, crouching down to hand her the pastry box. "Careful, kiddo. If you drop the cannoli, your mom is going to make me clean the windows."
Emma giggled, carefully taking the box and hugging it against her chest. "Mom made lasagna! And garlic bread! And I helped set the table all by myself!"
Sophia appeared in the doorway, wiping her hands on a clean dish towel tied around her waist, a radiant smile illuminating her face. "Welcome, Mr. Moretti. Marco. Please, come in out of the cold. The dining room is ready."
The interior of the cottage was cozy, smelling richly of baked mozzarella, fresh garlic, and melted butter. A roaring fire crackled in the stone hearth, casting a warm, golden glow across the rustic oak dining table where four places were neatly set with porcelain plates and polished silverware.
There were no armed guards standing outside the windows. There were no federal agents lurking in the hallway. There were no ledgers, no coded wire transfers, and no dark secrets hidden beneath the floorboards.
For the first time in his life, Alessandro Moretti sat down at a dinner table where the air was entirely free of fear.
As Sophia ladled generous portions of steaming lasagna onto their plates, Emma chattered excitedly about her second-grade spelling test and the stray cat she and her mother had started feeding on the back porch. Alessandro listened with rapt attention, nodding at all the right moments, occasionally trading amused glances with Marco across the table.
"You know, Mr. Moretti," Sophia said softly as she poured sparkling cider into their glasses. "Sometimes I still pinch myself. I wake up in the morning, look out the window at the maple trees, and I keep waiting for someone to knock on the door and tell me it was all a dream."
Alessandro set his fork down, his dark eyes meeting hers with absolute conviction. "It’s no dream, Sophia. You earned every square inch of this peace. And nobody will ever take it away from you."
Emma stopped chewing her garlic bread, her big brown eyes fixing on Alessandro with intense solemnity. "Does that mean you're going to stay here with us forever?"
The table fell quiet. Marco held his breath, wondering how the most feared mob boss in Manhattan would handle a six-year-old’s innocent demand for domestic permanence.
Alessandro looked at Emma, then at Sophia, and finally around the warm, sunlit room where laughter and safety had finally replaced shadow and paranoia.
"I have a very big house in the city, Emma," Alessandro said gently, a warm smile touching his lips. "It has lots of rooms, and a big desk, and millions of papers that need signing."
Emma’s face fell slightly, her lower lip trembling.
"...But," Alessandro continued, leaning forward across the table, "I think my schedule is flexible enough to drive up here every Sunday for dinner. Provided the lasagna isn't burnt."
Emma’s face lit up with a brilliant, gap-toothed grin. "Mom never burns the lasagna! Right, Mom?"
"Never," Sophia laughed, shaking her head as tears of pure happiness welled in her eyes.
Marco raised his glass of sparkling cider toward Alessandro. "To new schedules, Boss."
May you like
Alessandro raised his glass in return, clinking it softly against Marco’s, then against Sophia’s, and finally tapping it gently against Emma’s plastic cup.
"To new schedules," Alessandro echoed softly.
