Chapter 12 - The Midnight Call

12 - 15

The drive back to Manhattan was quiet. The moon hung high and silver over the Hudson River, casting long, pale reflections across the dark water as the sedan glided effortlessly down the West Side Highway.

In the back seat, Alessandro stared out the window, watching the distant lights of the city skyline grow larger as they approached the heart of the island. His mind was calm—a rare, unburdened state he hadn't experienced since he was a boy sitting in the corridor of his father’s home, waiting for the grown-ups to finish their dangerous business.

The phone in his pocket vibrated.

Alessandro pulled it out, expecting a routine update from the downtown security detail or a late-night financial wire confirmation from Zurich. Instead, the screen displayed an encrypted, high-priority satellite relay code—the kind used exclusively by international diplomatic channels.

He slid his thumb across the screen, answering the call.

"Moretti," he said, his voice dropping instantly into its professional, cold register.

"Alessandro," a smooth, cultured voice replied from the other end of the line. It was a voice he hadn't heard in five years—ambassador-level timbre, carrying the polished veneer of European high society. "It’s been a long time."

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed. "Viktor. I thought you retired to the French Riviera after the Berlin syndicates dissolved."

"Men like us don't retire, my friend," Viktor chuckled softly. "We simply relocate our offices. I’m calling because I received an interesting data packet this morning from an anonymous Department of Justice inspector general in New York. It seems a rather aggressive corporate entity named Meridian Logistics had its entire European portfolio frozen by a grand jury."

"They tried to play games in my city, Viktor," Alessandro said coldly. "They lost."

"So I gathered," Viktor replied. "And they are quite upset about it. In fact, my sources in Geneva tell me there are certain influential shareholders who view the dismantling of their New York branch as a personal insult. They are looking to reassert... stability in the Manhattan shipping lanes."

Alessandro felt the familiar, cold hardening of his resolve. The hydra had more than one head. Cutting off the American branch of Meridian Logistics had crippled their local operations, but the parent organization—a sprawling, transnational network of corrupt defense contractors and offshore syndicates—still existed in the shadows of global finance.

"Tell your sources in Geneva one thing for me, Viktor," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a register that made the encrypted phone line seem to hum with static.

"Name it," Viktor replied.

"If anyone from that syndicate so much as sets foot in New York airspace with the intention of disrupting the peace of my city... I won't just freeze their portfolios. I’ll burn their entire European network down to the foundations."

A long silence hung over the encrypted line. Then, Viktor let out a low, appreciative whistle.

"Ah. The rumors are true, then," Viktor murmured. "The cold, ruthless Alessandro Moretti has finally found something worth going to war for."

"Not something, Viktor," Alessandro corrected, his eyes fixed on the glittering lights of Fifth Avenue as the sedan turned toward the iron gates of his estate. "Someone."

He disconnected the call without waiting for a reply, slipping the phone back into his coat pocket as the sedan rolled smoothly through the open gates and came to a stop in the courtyard.

Marco killed the engine, turning around in the front seat. "Everything alright, Boss?"

"Everything is exactly where it needs to be," Alessandro said, opening the door and stepping out into the cool Manhattan air.

He walked up the stone steps of the grand entrance, pausing for a moment to look back over the courtyard, the Fifth Avenue mansion standing tall and secure against the autumn night sky. The war was never truly over; the shadows would always try to creep back in, testing the strength of the walls, looking for an unlocked door or a careless mistake.

Let them try.

He unlocked the heavy mahogany door, stepped inside, and locked it securely behind him.
