Chapter 8 - The First Family Dinner

8 - 15
The grand dining hall of the Blackwood estate was bathed in the warm, golden glow of a hundred candles flickering inside crystal chandeliers. Long tables draped in imported Belgian linen were laden with silver chafing dishes, crystal wine decanters, and a magnificent spread prepared by the estate’s newly vetted master chefs.
For the first time in seven years, the massive mahogany dining table was actually being used for what it was built for: a family dinner.
Amelia sat at the head of the table, wearing an emerald-green silk dress that complemented her dark hair and brought a healthy, natural flush back to her cheeks. Though she was still recovering physically, her spirit was unbreakable. To her right sat Lily, happily swinging her legs beneath her chair, wearing a pretty yellow dress and clutching her locket proudly around her neck.
And at the other end of the table sat Ethan, watching them both with a quiet, overwhelming sense of gratitude that words could never adequately capture.
“More roasted duck, sweetheart?” Ethan asked, standing up to carve another delicate slice for Lily’s plate.
“Yes, please, Daddy,” Lily smiled, her eyes sparkling with excitement. She still loved saying the word Daddy, as if testing it out to make sure it was real and would never be taken away again.
Amelia reached across the table, placing her hand gently over Ethan’s as he returned to his seat. “You know, looking at this room right now, it almost feels like we stepped out of time. As if those seven years were just a terrible, feverish dream.”
“It wasn’t a dream,” Ethan said softly, his fingers intertwining with hers. “It happened. But it’s over. And we survived it together.”
“We did,” Amelia agreed, her gaze shifting to Lily, who was busy feeding a small piece of bread to the estate’s golden retriever resting quietly under the table. “How are the police handling the remaining conspirators? Is anyone else from Victor’s network still out there?”
“Vance and the federal task force wrapped up the final arrests this afternoon,” Ethan reassured her. “Nora is cooperating with the prosecutor's office in exchange for a reduced sentence, and every mid-level manager who helped falsify the hospital records has been rounded up. By the end of the week, the entire criminal enterprise will be fully dismantled.”
Amelia let out a deep, contented sigh, leaning back in her chair and raising her crystal glass of sparkling cider. “Then I propose a toast.”
Ethan and Lily both picked up their glasses, looking toward the center of the table.
“To new beginnings,” Amelia said, her eyes shining with quiet strength. “To the ones who never gave up, and to the family we fought so hard to bring back together.”
“To family,” Ethan echoed, his voice ringing out clearly through the grand hall.

“To family!” Lily cheered happily, clinking her glass against Ethan’s with a bright, infectious laugh that filled every corner of the ancient mansion with life, warmth, and unyielding hope.
For the Blackwood family, the dark night was finally over. The morning sun was here to stay.
