Chapter 10 - The Anonymous Beneficiary

10 - 15
The morning sun cast long, golden beams across the minimalist glass-and-steel offices of Vance Security Consulting downtown. Commander Vance stood at the head of the conference table, clicking through a series of encrypted financial transaction ledgers displayed on the massive smartboard.
Ethan sat near the center of the table, his arms crossed over his chest, his expression hard and analytical.
“We decrypted the secondary partition late last night,” Vance reported, pointing a laser pointer at a complex web of shell corporations scrolling across the screen. “The money didn't originate from domestic accounts. It was funneled through a network of holding companies based in Zurich, the Cayman Islands, and the British Virgin Islands before landing in Victor’s Swiss syndicate.”
“How much?” Ethan asked.
“Over forty million dollars,” Vance replied. “Distributed in incremental tranches over the last seven years—matching almost to the exact day the hospital fire occurred and Amelia was transferred to the subterranean bunker.”
Ethan leaned forward, his eyes locked on the screen. “Forty million just to keep Amelia hidden and manage the corporate succession? Victor was greedy, but forty million is far more than what a simple corporate buyout requires. Someone else was bankrolling the entire operation.”
“Exactly,” Vance nodded, pulling up a new slide showing a heavily redacted legal document bearing an old corporate seal. “And look at the signature line on the primary trust agreement. The primary beneficiary holding power of attorney isn't Victor Blackwood. It’s a secondary trustee who activated their legal rights the moment Victor was detained by federal marshals.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened. “Who is the trustee?”
“That’s the complication,” Vance said grimly. “The name on the legal filing has been scrubbed using military-grade encryption protocols. But our cyber-recon team managed to recover a partial metadata stamp from the digital signature. The document was notarized at a private legal firm in Geneva—a firm that exclusively represents the Sterling family.”
Ethan stood up so fast his executive chair rolled backward, slamming against the glass wall behind him.
“The Sterlings?” Ethan’s voice echoed sharply through the conference room. “Julian Sterling was my father’s oldest business partner. He died in a plane crash over the Alps twenty years ago.”
“His estate didn't die,” Vance replied softly. “And his surviving heirs have maintained quiet, underground ties to the regional shipping cartels for decades. If the Sterlings were bankrolling Victor, it means the plot wasn’t just about a corporate board vote. It was a hostile takeover of the entire Blackwood family legacy from the very beginning.”
Ethan stared at the smartboard, the pieces of a much darker, much larger conspiracy finally snapping into focus. Victor wasn’t the mastermind; he was simply the knife in someone else’s hand.

“Find out who currently controls the Sterling estate,” Ethan commanded, his voice cold and resolute. “Every bank account, every property deed, every offshore holding. I want to know who stepped into that trust the moment Victor went to jail.”
“Already on it, Mr. Blackwood,” Vance said, tapping his tablet. “We’ll have a name by tonight.”
