Chapter 7 - The Vault of Shadows

7 - 15

Deep beneath the reinforced concrete foundations of the Blackwood mansion, hidden behind a biometric security vault that required both retinal scans and a multi-layer encryption key, lay the lower holding level. It was cold, damp, and lit only by the harsh, flickering amber glow of emergency security lights.

Victor Blackwood sat on a bolted steel bench in the center of a ten-by-ten concrete holding cell. His expensive Italian suit was hopelessly wrinkled, his silver hair unkempt, and the arrogant, untouchable aura that had defined his entire existence had completely evaporated, leaving behind a pathetic, broken old man staring mindlessly at the concrete floor.

A heavy footstep echoed down the concrete corridor.

Victor snapped his head up, blinking against the bright glare of the hallway lights. Footsteps approached his cell, stopping right in front of the reinforced steel bars.

Ethan Blackwood stood in the doorway, his hands casually tucked into the pockets of his dark overcoat. He didn't look angry. He didn't look triumphant. He looked at Victor the way a scientist might look at a particularly repulsive specimen under a microscope.

“Victor,” Ethan said quietly, his voice echoing off the damp stone walls.

Victor scrambled off the bench, rushing toward the bars and grabbing the cold steel with both hands. His face was twisted in a desperate, pleading mask.

“Ethan! Thank God!” Victor cried out, his voice cracking hysterically. “You have to let me out of here! This is madness! You can’t lock your own flesh and blood in a dungeon like a common criminal! We’re Blackwoods!”

“That’s funny,” Ethan replied smoothly, stepping closer to the bars. “For seven years, I thought we were Blackwoods too. But apparently, family is just a liability when there’s a billion-dollar empire on the line.”

“I made mistakes!” Victor begged, tears of genuine terror spilling over his eyelids. “I was under pressure from the board! The debt consolidation was crushing us! If you release me, I’ll sign over all my personal holdings, I’ll leave the country, you’ll never see me again! Just… please, don’t leave me down here.”

Ethan stared at him in silence for a long, agonizing moment.

“You left my wife in a subterranean medical bunker for seven years,” Ethan said, his voice dropping into a register so chillingly quiet that Victor instinctively flinched. “You locked my seven-year-old daughter in a dark room and threatened her with poison. You burned down a hospital ward full of innocent people just to protect your stock portfolio.”

Victor opened his mouth, but no words came out.

“Federal marshals are arriving at midnight to transfer you to a maximum-security federal penitentiary,” Ethan continued, turning slightly toward the exit. “You will spend the rest of your life in a six-by-eight concrete box with no windows, no visitors, and no corporate power to hide behind.”

“No! Ethan, you can’t!” Victor screamed, slamming his fists against the bars as despair finally consumed him. “You’ll ruin me! You’ll destroy the family name!”

May you like

“The family name died the night you tried to burn it to the ground,” Ethan said without looking back. “I’m just here to sweep up the ashes.”

Ethan walked down the dim corridor, his footsteps fading away into the silence of the vault, leaving Victor alone in the dark, screaming into the empty stone walls with no one left to hear him.
