Chapter 7 - The Torrent and the Shattered Pier-1

The mechanical release lever gave a deafening metallic screech as decades-old industrial gears spun into motion beneath the boathouse flooring. With a sudden, violent shudder, the heavy iron sluice gates facing the lower reservoir unlocked completely, unleashing thousands of gallons of pressurized lake water directly into the subterranean drainage conduits beneath the property.

BOOM!

A wall of water surged up through the drainage grates and floor vents of the boathouse like an erupting geyser, instantly flooding the lower deck and turning the wooden floorboards into a chaotic, churning rapid.

"What the hell—?!" Victor shouted, stumbling backward as a massive wave of icy water crashed over the end of the pier, soaking his immaculate Italian leather shoes and throwing his aim completely off.

"Elena! Now! Get out through the roof hatch!" Alessandro roared, dropping back down into the tunnel and grabbing Sophia, hoisting the little girl onto his shoulders while pushing Elena up the secondary emergency ladder that led to the shingled roof of the boathouse exterior.

The water in the tunnels was rising fast, swirling around their ankles with freezing, hip-high force, but the torrent had created total chaos for Victor’s tactical team. The SUVs parked on the gravel access road were suddenly knee-deep in rushing water, their alarm systems blaring wildly as electrical systems short-circuited in flashing bursts of sparks.

Victor caught his balance on the pier, his face purple with rage, water dripping from the hem of his expensive overcoat. He raised his suppressed Walther PPK and fired three frantic rounds toward the boathouse roof hatch where Elena and Sophia were scrambling out into the open air.

Pfft-pfft-pfft!

The bullets chewed into the wooden shingles inches from Elena’s boots, but she didn't stop. She hauled herself and Sophia over the peak of the roof just as Alessandro emerged behind them, his Beretta barking twice in retaliation.

Bang! Bang!

Alessandro’s bullets shattered the halogen spotlight mounted on the dock piling, plunging the immediate shoreline into sudden, disorienting darkness, save for the flickering amber glow of the burning vehicle electrical systems.

"Fall back! Kill the lights! Get him!" Victor screamed, waving his arms frantically as his tactical guards scrambled blindly through the rising floodwaters, slipping and sliding on the muddy shoreline.

Alessandro didn't give them time to regroup. He grabbed Elena by the arm, keeping little Sophia tucked safely against his side, and vaulted over the rear slope of the boathouse roof down into the thick, protective cover of the old willow grove bordering the estate's perimeter wall.

The perimeter wall was twelve feet of reinforced concrete topped with razor wire and motion sensors—an obstacle designed to keep intruders out, but completely vulnerable to someone who held the master bypass codes in his pocket.

Remembering the keycard he had taken from the unconscious guard in the subterranean tunnel, Alessandro pulled the plastic card from his jacket as they sprinted through the dense underbrush.

"Mr. Moretti... my legs... I can't run much farther," Elena gasped, her breath coming in ragged sobs as she struggled to keep pace through the muddy grass.

"Just another fifty yards," Alessandro urged, supporting her weight with one arm while holding his weapon ready with the other. "Look! The maintenance gate is right there."

Through the tangled branches of the willow trees, a heavy steel service gate loomed out of the darkness. A small electronic keypad glowed with a faint green light beside the latch.

As they burst out of the tree line onto the gravel access road, the heavy thrum of approaching helicopter rotors suddenly filled the night sky above them.

Alessandro looked up. Two matte-black Eurocopter twin-engine choppers bearing no identification markings swept low over the treeline, their searchlights sweeping the estate grounds in a grid pattern.

Victor’s backup had arrived. And they weren't just local guards anymore; they were a professional corporate extraction unit equipped to sanitize the entire estate—leaving no witnesses behind.
