Chapter 3 - The Flash in the Dark and the Escape Down the Service Stairs-1

The movement was lightning-fast—the reflex of a killer who had survived decades in the underworld. Even with twenty-five years of shared history behind them, Victor Salvatore did not hesitate. His hand cleared the holster, drawing a compact, suppressed Walther PPK with fluid, deadly expertise.
But Alessandro Moretti was not a man who survived at the top of the food chain by being unprepared for betrayal.
The moment Victor’s hand twitched toward his jacket, Alessandro kicked the heavy mahogany dining table forward with brute force. The massive piece of furniture slammed directly into Victor’s shins, throwing his aim off by crucial inches just as a muffled pfft-pfft tore through the air. Two silent bullets punched through the velvet upholstery of the chair Alessandro had been sitting in seconds before, burying themselves deep into the oak paneling behind it.
"Elena! Take the child!" Alessandro roared, drawing his own customized Beretta from his shoulder harness in a single, fluid motion.
Elena didn't scream. Years of living on the edge of the syndicate had forged her into something tougher than ordinary domestic staff. She scooped five-year-old Sophia into her arms, turning and sprinting through the pantry doors toward the back service stairs just as glass shattered behind them.
Victor cursed, shoving the heavy mahogany table aside with a vicious grunt. His face was no longer that of a trusted advisor; it was twisted into an ugly mask of rage. "You arrogant bastard, Alessandro! After everything I built for you—after every body I buried so you could sit on your golden throne!"
"You built nothing, Victor!" Alessandro shouted back, firing two rapid shots toward the dining room doorway to pin Victor behind the heavy doorframe. The bullets chipped chunks of plaster from the wall, showering white dust over the polished marble. "You were a parasite living in the shadow of my name!"
Alessandro backed away toward the service corridor, keeping his weapon leveled at the doorway. He knew he couldn't stay in the main house. Victor had likely compromised the primary security detail hours ago; calling for help through the internal comms would only alert the other turncoats scattered across the estate.
He slipped through the pantry doors just as Victor fired again, the suppressed round splintering the wooden frame inches from Alessandro’s ear.
Entering the service hallway, Alessandro caught sight of Elena and Sophia vanishing down the metal spiral staircase that led directly to the lower ground floor and the old wine cellars.
"Down! Keep moving!" Alessandro urged, covering their rear as they descended into the cool, damp shadows beneath the mansion.
The air down here smelled of aging oak, damp stone, and crushed limestone. It was a labyrinth of dark corridors, hidden tunnels, and forgotten storage rooms that dated back to the estate's prohibition-era bootlegging days—tunnels that only Alessandro and, ironically, Victor knew intimately.
As they hit the concrete floor of the cellar, the emergency lighting flickered overhead, casting long, writhing shadows against the stone walls.
"Mr. Moretti," Elena whispered, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she clutched Sophia tightly against her chest. The little girl was remarkably silent, her big dark eyes wide with terror, but she didn't cry out. "Where... where do we go? The front gates will be locked by Victor’s men."
"We aren't going to the front gates," Alessandro said, his eyes scanning the dim corridor for the hidden latch of the secondary drainage exit. "We’re going to the old boathouse on the lake. Gabriel may be compromised, but the emergency transponder in my vault is hardware-encrypted. If we can reach the boathouse radio, we can ping the loyalist cells in the city."
"Mr. Victor... he knows these tunnels, sir," Elena warned, her voice trembling.

"I know he does," Alessandro replied, pulling a heavy tactical flashlight from his belt and clicking it on. The sharp beam cut through the gloom, illuminating the damp stone walls. "Which is why we have to move faster than he can think. Come on. Stay behind me."
They plunged deeper into the subterranean dark, unaware that right above them, the estate's automated security grid had just shifted into lockdown mode, locking every door, sealing every window, and turning the magnificent Moretti mansion into an inescapable iron tomb.
