Chapter 2 - The Smooth Smile of a Master Conspirator-2

The heavy oak door swung inward with effortless, oiled grace, revealing Victor Salvatore standing in the dimly lit hallway. He was dressed with his customary, immaculate precision: a dark charcoal three-piece suit, a crisp white collar fastened with a silver pin, and his silver-streaked hair brushed back from a face that radiated decades of loyal, grandfatherly benevolence.

In his right hand, Victor carried a small silver tray holding a fresh crystal glass of mineral water, perfectly chilled with a single artisanal ice sphere.

"Ah, you're still up," Victor said, stepping into the room with a relaxed, easy stride. His eyes flicked quickly past Alessandro to take in Elena and the child standing near the pantry doors. A microscopic flicker of annoyance crossed his features, though it vanished so fast it would have been invisible to anyone lacking Alessandro’s lifetime of training in reading human deceit. "I trust little Sophia isn't causing any trouble. Children can be terribly imaginative at that hour."

"Not trouble at all, Victor," Alessandro replied smoothly, stepping out from behind the dining table. He walked slowly toward his old friend, his eyes locked onto Victor’s expression. "In fact, Sophia was just showing me her artwork. She has a remarkable eye for detail. She notices things adults are far too blind to see."

Victor paused, his boots stopping three feet away. He glanced down at the table where the crayon drawing lay abandoned beside the untouched espresso cup. For a fraction of a second, Victor’s gaze lingered on the two rows of circles and the notation 8:12. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

"Children's drawings," Victor chuckled, a light, dismissive sound that lacked any real warmth. "They draw monsters in the closet and stars on the floor. I'm surprised you let her distract you, Alessandro. Your heart rate has been delicate this week. Dr. Vance was quite specific about stress management."

"Dr. Vance is thorough," Alessandro agreed, stopping directly opposite Victor. They were nearly eye-to-eye now. For twenty-five years, this man had been the shield that protected Alessandro from assassins, hostile syndicates, and treacherous board members. "Tell me, Victor... when did Dr. Vance update my prescription?"

Victor didn't blink. His posture remained relaxed, the silver tray steady in his hand. "Three months ago, remember? When your resting heartbeat spiked after the port authority acquisition. The new compound is a specialized beta-blocker imported from a boutique lab in Zurich. It's designed to stabilize erratic ventricular rhythms without causing fatigue."

"Zurich," Alessandro repeated, his tone conversational, almost lazy. "Expensive city. High standards of medical purity."

"The absolute best for you, Alessandro. You know I wouldn't settle for less," Victor replied softly, his voice dripping with an almost sickening devotion. He extended the silver tray slightly, offering the glass of water. "Now, please... take your tablet. It’s past your schedule. I wouldn't want you collapsing on me before the morning summit with the maritime board."

Elena held her breath across the room. Little Sophia buried her face deeper into her mother’s apron, her small fingers clutching the yellow sweater until her knuckles ached.

Alessandro looked down at the silver tray, then back up into Victor’s eyes. He didn't take the glass. Instead, his hand slid slowly into the inner pocket of his jacket, his fingers brushing against the cold, hard contours of the amber prescription bottle he had retrieved from the table.

"Victor," Alessandro murmured, stepping an inch closer. "What if I told you that the new compound isn't stabilizing my heart at all?"

Victor’s smile didn't break, but the skin around his eyes tightened, pulling into a web of micro-tension. "What are you implying, Alessandro?"

"I’m implying," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper, "that over the last three months, my heart hasn't been stabilizing because the dosage hasn't been designed to heal me. It’s been designed to mimic a natural, stress-induced cardiac arrest. A quiet death. No blood, no bullets, no police investigations. Just a wealthy, aging boss passing away peacefully in his bed while his loyal right-hand man inherits the keys to the kingdom."

The silence that followed was absolute. The grandfather clock in the foyer ticked off the seconds like a judge's gavel.

Victor’s eyes hardened. The grandfatherly mask slipped away, revealing the cold, calcified ambition of a man who had spent a quarter-century waiting for a throne that was never going to be handed to him.

May you like

The silver tray tilted. The crystal glass slid across the metal surface.

"You always were too observant for your own good, old friend," Victor whispered, his hand dropping smoothly toward the concealed holster beneath his tailored jacket.
