Chapter 8 - The Digital Counter-Attack

The glow of the computer monitors illuminated the basement command center in a pale blue light. Luka sat at the main console, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with rapid, practiced precision as streams of encrypted code cascaded down three separate screens.
Clara sat across from him, holding Maya while she nursed, feeling a strange, surreal calm settling over her. The cabin above was quiet, shielded by miles of dense pine forest and advanced signal-jamming arrays that Luka had activated the moment they arrived.
“What are we doing?” Clara asked, watching a progress bar slowly tick upward on the central monitor.
“We’re draining their oxygen,” Luka replied without looking up. “Julian Sterling thinks he’s running the operation in Columbus. But his firm is entirely dependent on clearing transactions through a network of Cayman Island shell companies managed by a holding corporation called Vanguard Global. Vanguard Global is the financial arm of the syndicate.”
“And you can touch them?” Clara asked, skeptically.
“Your father spent the last ten years of his life building a backdoor into their primary financial ledger,” Luka said, pressing the Enter key with a sharp, decisive tap. “He called it the Janus Protocol. Every dollar Julian embezzled from your father’s estate, every bribe paid to judges and corrupt medical examiners, every offshore wire transfer linked to the M-17 program—it’s all registered in this database.”
A large green checkmark flashed across the center screen.
ACCESS GRANTED - MASTER LEDGER UNLOCKED.
On the screen, thousands of corporate accounts, secret bank vaults, and real estate holdings materialized in a staggering financial map of corruption that stretched from Wall Street to Geneva.
“Look at this,” Luka pointed to a specific sub-file highlighted in red.
Clara leaned forward, her eyes scanning the data lines. There were detailed transaction logs showing regular monthly payments from Vanguard Global directly to Julian Sterling’s personal offshore accounts—along with an ongoing escrow transfer earmarked for “Child Custody Acquisition - Project M-17.”
“He sold us,” Clara whispered, the last lingering fragment of her marriage shattering into dust. “He didn't just abandon us... he put a bounty on our daughter’s head before she was even born.”
“Men like Julian value power above all else,” Luka said quietly. “When the syndicate offered him a partnership and total control of the regional legal sector in exchange for securing the M-17 genome, he didn't hesitate.”
“So what’s our next move?” Clara asked, her voice steady and resolute. “Do we send this to the FBI?”
“The FBI is compromised at the regional director level,” Luka shook his head. “If we send it through standard channels, Julian’s legal team will have it buried before the sun sets. We don't leak it to the authorities, Clara. We leak it to the public.”
Luka reached into his pocket, pulled out a small, encrypted drive, and plugged it into a secondary port.
“At 12:00 PM today—right during the middle of the annual Columbus Bar Association gala where Julian is scheduled to receive the ‘Lawyer of the Year’ award—the Janus Protocol will broadcast every single financial record, intercepted phone call, and medical forgery directly to every major news outlet, stock exchange, and social media platform in the country.”

Clara stared at the screen, a fierce, dark satisfaction warming her chest. “He’s going to fall from the very stage he built for himself.”
“He won't just fall,” Luka corrected, his eyes locking onto hers with cold intensity. “He’s going to beg for a prison cell by the time we’re finished with him.”
